Job description

BSG is hiring an experienced Security Officer to cover multiple sites in Oakland, including downtown and a prestigious university. The position will cover static and roving positions as well as Incident Response. The ideal candidate will be equipped with specialized skills in de-escalation and crisis management, ensuring the safety and well-being of our university and community. This Flex position requires Open Availability to cover all shifts any day of the week and requires that the Officer possess experience working with students, the public, and clients at a variety of sites.
 
This position requires a strong commitment to proactive security measures, effective communication, and rapid response to incidents. The Flex Security Officer position will be directly responsible for the accurate documentation of routine and unusual events occurring on or near the campus, buildings, and downtown region. The team must maintain an expert level of knowledge of the campus rules and always provide professional interactions that promote safety and confidence for the people that encompass the property.
 
Position Summary:
 
The Flex Security Officer provides a wide variety of essential services to the Downtown Oakland Community and our private college campus. As a Flex Security Officer, your duties will be varied; however, the ideal candidate will demonstrate interpersonal skills that contribute to the delivery of an exceptional client and community experience. The Flex position requires open availability to cover Morning, Swing, and Grave shifts, Monday through Sunday, with a minimum 8-hour notice.
 
Position Description:
 
Flex Security Officers play a crucial role in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment in our city's downtown area and at a prestigious private college campus. Patrolling on foot, by bike, or by vehicle, they serve as a visible deterrent to unwanted behavior and activities, offering assistance, information, and directions to downtown workers, residents, students, faculty, and visitors.

Schedule: This is a flex full-time position for Morning, Swing, and Grave shifts with a minimum 8-hour notice as needed. Candidates must have the ability to work up to 10-hour shifts any day within a 7-day week.

  • Shifts: 7-day availability to work Morning, Swing, and Grave shifts with 8-hour notice (Weekend availability required).
  • Hourly Rate: $31.00 per hour.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Possess a current California Guard Card License.
  • A valid Driver's License and a clean driving record for 3 years is required.
  • Reliable transportation is necessary and ability to commute to sites throughout Oakland and San Jose. 
  • Proficient in basic computer and smartphone usage.
  • Ambassadors are required to wear a duty belt and ballistic vest throughout the shift.
  • Ability to stand and walk for several hours, covering up to 8-10 miles per shift.
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in English to create accurate reports; additional language skills are a plus.
  • Strong listening skills, patience, and compassion, particularly when interacting with community members experiencing emotional or psychological challenges.
  • Ability to remain calm in crisis situations, think critically, de-escalate conflicts, and communicate effectively.
  • Maintain a positive, professional demeanor in adherence to all laws, regulations, company policies, and confidentiality standards.
  • Ensure compliance with both company and client policies and procedures while being open to performance improvement.
  • Possess a clear understanding of emergency response procedures and protocols.
  • At least one year of experience in security, mobile patrol, or event staff roles.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Successfully pass a background check and drug screening.

Physical Requirements:

This role requires specific physical abilities to ensure the Security Guard can effectively perform essential job duties. The candidate must be able to:

  • Stand, Walk or Sit for Extended Periods:  Ability to sit while driving a vehicle, stand or walk for long periods, often for several hours at a time, including traversing outdoor areas with uneven surfaces, without significant physical strain.
  • Climb Stairs: Regularly climb stairs and navigate multi-level buildings to perform patrols and check all areas.
  • Lift and Carry: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds to move or secure equipment, and assist with other duties as necessary.
  • Physical Endurance: Ability to withstand various weather conditions during outdoor patrols, including hot, cold, rainy, or windy weather.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle and operate security equipment, such as radios, keys, and locks.
  • Run or Move Quickly: Ability to sprint short distances if needed to respond quickly to emergencies or incidents.
  • Physical Stamina: Capable of working long hours while remaining alert and focused throughout the shift. De-escalate stressful situations with professionalism and patience.  
  • Kneeling and Bending: Ability to kneel, crouch, and bend to check low-level areas, secure entrances, or assist in emergencies.
  • Vision and Hearing: Strong vision and hearing to observe surroundings, monitor security systems, and detect alarms or sounds of distress.
