What is fixed ops?

Fixed Ops, short for Fixed Operations, refers to the departments in a car dealership that handle service, parts, and collision repairs—essentially, all operations outside of vehicle sales. This includes the service department (where maintenance and repairs are performed), parts department (which manages inventory and sales of vehicle parts), and often the body shop. Fixed Ops are crucial for generating steady revenue and profit for dealerships since these services are needed regardless of vehicle sales trends.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a fixed operations manager?

To thrive as a Fixed Operations Manager, you need strong knowledge of automotive service and parts operations, business management skills, and experience in dealership environments, often supported by relevant certifications or training. Familiarity with dealership management systems (DMS), inventory management software, and service scheduling tools is essential. Leadership, problem-solving, and customer service skills are crucial for motivating teams and ensuring client satisfaction. These competencies drive operational efficiency, profitability, and customer loyalty in automotive service departments.

What are common challenges faced by fixed ops professionals in automotive dealerships?
