Job description

First United Methodist Church of Slidell

Job Title: Interim Director of Music Ministries

Reports To: Senior Pastor and SPRC and coordinates with the Worship Committee

Position Type: Part Time, Salaried (includes evenings, weekends, and schedule flexibility)


Position Summary

The Interim Director of Music Ministries is responsible for establishing, overseeing, and maintaining the music ministry programs of this church, the Chancel Choir, and provide oversight for other music ministries in order to produce a quality music program in support of traditional Sunday morning worship services. This is an interim position for approximately 6-9 months until a permanent position is filled. The Interim Director of Music Ministries will be eligible for the permanent position.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·      Recruit, train, and support individuals to participate in the Chancel Choir

·      Adapt music program to the needs of the membership and community

·      Select anthems according to scripture and season

·      Conduct music rehearsals and produce practice recordings as necessary

·      Lead Chancel Choir anthem at least two Sunday mornings per month and provide special worship music during summer choir break

·      Lead hymn singing during traditional Sunday morning worship services

·      Plan and lead annual and special seasonal music programming for Christmas Eve, cantatas, Holy week and Easter, and other occasions as identified

·      Recruit, hire, and conduct instrumental musicians and singers/soloists necessary for special programming

·      Ensure professional dress for paid musicians

·      Develop an annual budget to purchase music supplies, maintain musical equipment and instruments (robes, pianos, organ, chimes, and handbells), review needs with Senior Pastor and Board of Trustees, submit budget request to Finance Committee

·      Oversee Praise Band, Handbell and Children’s Choir Directors, instrument usage, and budget

·      Keep music library in order and expand as needed

·      Secure a substitute choir director/accompanist in event of absence

 

Qualifications

·      Possess keen knowledge of traditional liturgical music and sound reinforcement equipment

·      Possess basic computer and keyboard skills

·      Present ability to recruit, inspire, and work well with volunteers

·      Possess effective communication and organizational skills

·      Manage music budget effectively

·      Engage congregational singing

·      Possess ability to recruit and conduct orchestra, choral, and instrumental ensembles

·      Possess 1-3 years church musician experience

·      Prefer pipe organ playing experience

·      Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent combination of education and experience in performing arts
