Long Beach Transit maintains a fleet of buses, which includes 60-ft. articulated buses, gasoline hybrids, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Diesel, and battery propulsions systems.  This position performs all types of bus vehicle repairs, inspections, maintenance and electrical repairs, ranging from minor to major.   Mechanics that are hired will be placed in  “C” classification. Under supervision and training, have opportunities for advancement to "B" and "A" mechanic.

  • Able to demonstrate safe working practices
  • Troubleshoot, service and repair; diesel, CNG, gasoline hybrid, and battery powered propulsion systems
  • Works with all tools of the trade, including bus computer based diagnostic software programs
  • Performs all preventative maintenance inspections
  • Inspects and maintains air systems and air brake components
  • Performs detailed electrical repairs and diagnoses component failures
  • Performs suspension repairs and maintenance
  • Performs diagnosis and repairs for heating, ventilations and air conditioning systems
  • Ability to work independently performing over the road repairs
  • Performs engine and transmission diagnosis and repairs
  • Assists other mechanics as needed
  • Ability to learn new technologies

Candidates must be 21 years or older with a valid California Class C driver’s license, an excellent safe driving record, and a Class B driver’s permit, with the ability to upgrade to a Class B license. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The essential duties and responsibilities listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education and/or Experience

The equivalent of a high school diploma or GED.  Two years of full-time hands-on vehicle mechanic experience, equivalent training and education/coursework in this field may be considered. Knowledge of electrical systems, heavy equipment, and alternative fuel.  Intermediate knowledge with computer diagnostics and computer skills are highly desirable.

Other Requirements

The essential functions of the job are performed in a shop environment.  This job requires an individual to obtain personal tools and meet the company’s tool requirements.  Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to perform the job, and be willing to work any of the three shifts available.

Salary Structure 

Mechanic C - $32.59 per hour 

Mechanic B - $36.91 per hour

Mechanic A - $39.27 per hour

Based on experience, with excellent company paid fringe benefits.
