Job Description
The is seeking to hire a Diesel Mechanicto serve the
Summary:
Responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of all Fire Department vehicles, equipment, and ground support equipment. Work involves preventative maintenance, diagnostics, emergency repairs, and recordkeeping to ensure compliance with department requirements.

Essential Job Functions:
Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Respond to fleet and facility maintenance requests.
  2. Coordinates, monitors, and performs preventive, predictive and proactive maintenance and repairs of department apparatus and facilities.
  3. Perform engine, hydraulic, electrical, brake, suspension, and drivetrain repairs as required.
  4. Respond to equipment breakdowns and conducts emergency repairs to minimize downtime.
  5. Troubleshoots mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and software.
  6. Determines vehicle, facility, and equipment condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests, identifies worn and damaged parts for repairs.
  7. Performs tests and inspects vehicles and equipment prior to and following repairs, while maintaining records of services performed and parts installed.
  8. Basic knowledge of construction, plumbing and electrical systems.
  9. Engages with program to rehabilitate and/or replace facilities and department vehicles and apparatus.
  10. Maintains accurate inventory of equipment, tools, and materials.
  11. Keep maintenance shop and equipment functional, clean, safe, and organized.
  12. Performs snow removal the City of Williston Fire Department facilities as necessary or required.
  13. Provide training/instruction to fire and EMS staff on preventative maintenance, reporting requirements, vehicle failure, and general apparatus operations. Participate in internal and external working groups to coordinate maintenance efforts.
  14. The ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine circumstances, and in critical situations.
  15. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  16. Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
  17. Ability to work both independently and in group settings.
  18. Attends training as required or recommended.
  19. Ensures ongoing compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  20. Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations & Experience:
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid ND Driver's License, or ability to obtain one within six months of hire.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree is preferred, or a combination of relevant education, training, and experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience as a diesel mechanic or automotive mechanic.
  • 1-3 years of experience of facilities maintenance experience.
  • Knowledge and ability to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to gather, analyze and distribute data required.
  • Ability to perform the duties of this classification.
  • Prior work experience in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicle and/or heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and small engine systems.
  • Individual must be willing and able to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, & holidays.
  • Ability to work in and support a teamwork environment.
  • Strong computer skills with ability to effectively utilize programs such as the Microsoft suite with ability to learn new programs introduced in the future.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Training opportunities available to obtain desired certifications for incumbents who have met the minimum certificate, license, and registration requirements.

Use of Equipment and/or Computers:
Regular use of technology and equipment for job-related functions will be required including but not limited to computers, phones, printers and equipment pertaining to fire prevention, suppression and pre-hospital emergency medical care.
Physical Demands:
Standing in work areas, walking between work areas, and driving to various locations will be required. There will be a regular expectation to pull, push, reach, walk, stand, sit, crawl, kneel, bend and have the use of hands and fingers, use of both eyes for sight, including ability to distinguish color and distance, hearing, extensive use of arms and legs to climb on top of, under, in and around equipment and facilities; work in proximity and use of computer screens; verbally communicating and moving objects. The employee must be able to physically move, lift, carry and manipulate up to 100 pounds.
Work Environment:
While this position is primarily located in an office setting, there will be work performed in the field at Fire/EMS scenes. The employee will work at all City of Williston Fire Department facilities and is expected to keep work areas clean, safe, and functional. The employee frequently works in both indoor and outdoor weather environments. The employee may be exposed to demanding, hazardous conditions with frequent exposure to smoke, extreme temperatures, loud noises, chemicals, and physical dangers like heights, traffic, and collapsing structures, requiring constant readiness. Essential functions require maintaining condition necessary for sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time. The noise level in the work environment is moderate but can occasionally be loud.
Work Schedule:
This position typically works Monday - Friday 8AM - 5PM. There is an expectation of occasional work to be done outside the typical schedule (irregular fleet and/or maintenance issues that occur after hours).
The employee may be required to work extended hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Regular, predictable, and dependable attendance is required.
