Position Description:
Manage overall day-to-day activity of accounting department and oversight of all project accounting staff.

Reports to: Financial Manager, Operational Finance


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create supportive environment to develop high performing finance team, provide training opportunities and engage in mentoring relationships.
  • Lead accountants and other related team members, provide timely performance feedback and contribute to performance appraisals during annual performance cycle, utilizing talent management systems.
  • Review all contracts and participate in project set-up meetings with project staff to ensure contract compliance.
  • Manage accounts receivable function to ensure accurate and timely billings.
  • Review monthly cash position report ensuring over/under billings are correct and cash management strategy is aligned between finance and operations.
  • Review hourly, part-time, over-time, and bi-weekly submission of timesheets (salary payroll) for accuracy and completion.
  • Resolve daily project issues including subcontractor disputes, escalate to financial manager as appropriate.
  • Review special check requests ensuring paperwork is in order prior to submission to financial manager for approval.
  • Resolve local tax reporting issues including sales and use tax.
  • Ensure movement of preconstruction expenses to job cost.
  • Ensure billing proofs are complete and accurate.
  • Manage monthly and quarterly departmental audits per compliance with policy and procedures.
  • Review and monitor timely and accurate submission of all reports submitted by accountants.
  • Other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field, and 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Construction industry experience preferred
  • Supervisory/management of small team preferred
  • Thorough application of accounting principles (i.e. journal entries, general ledger)
  • Analytic ability to review and assess financial data, interpret trends, and recognize inconsistencies
  • Understands accounting implications of various contract terms
  • Demonstrates understanding of cash flows and implements procedures to optimize interest income
  • Knowledgeable of policies and standards to ensure compliance while identifying financial risks
  • Displays actions related to profitability and risk management and effectively communicates risk management issues
  • Exercises independent judgment and discretion with ability to identify problems and initiate corrective action
  • Able to apply innovation to offer and implement suggestions to improve overall operations
  • Ability to manage many activities, requests, and short-cycle deadlines simultaneously
  • Able to observe performance and effectively provide performance feedback
  • Proficient with financial system applications, MS Excel, and MS Office
  • Self-motivated, adaptable and flexible to operate with minimal direction and little or no supervision while working in complex and changing environment
  • Lead by example and set standards for performance and behavior; act with integrity and professionalism, strong dedication to teamwork
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • High degree of organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Some travel required
