What does a Feed Manager do?

A Feed Manager is responsible for overseeing the formulation, procurement, and distribution of animal feed on farms or within agricultural businesses. They ensure that livestock receive the correct nutrition by managing feed inventories, coordinating with suppliers, and monitoring feed quality. Feed Managers also work closely with veterinarians and nutritionists to optimize animal health and productivity, while maintaining compliance with industry standards and regulations. Their role may also involve record-keeping, budgeting, and supervising feed mill or farm staff.

How does a Feed Manager typically collaborate with nutritionists, veterinarians, and farm staff to optimize livestock nutrition plans?

Feed Managers play a central role in coordinating with nutritionists, veterinarians, and farm staff to ensure that livestock receive balanced and cost-effective diets. They regularly review feed formulations with nutritionists to meet animals' nutritional requirements and consult veterinarians when health concerns arise that may require dietary adjustments. Feed Managers also communicate with farm staff to monitor feed delivery, storage, and consumption, ensuring that feeding practices align with both nutritional goals and operational efficiency. This collaboration helps maintain animal health, productivity, and overall farm profitability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Feed Manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Feed Manager, you need a strong background in animal nutrition, inventory management, and agricultural operations, often supported by a degree in animal science or agribusiness. Familiarity with feed formulation software, quality control systems, and regulatory compliance tools is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills that help manage supplies and coordinate with farm staff. These competencies ensure optimal animal health, cost-effective feed operations, and adherence to industry standards.

Description

The Happy Egg Company - Cromwell, IN | Full-time, On-site

Reports to the VP of Operations

As Feed Mill Manager, you will direct and coordinate everything that goes into producing great feed - the schedules, the people, the equipment, and the quality. You will keep production humming, help build a food-safety-first culture, and make sure every barn on the farm is fed on time. If you love a hands-on production floor and a tight-knit team, this one's for you.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Run the schedule. Build weekly feed schedules and production plans so every barn is fed on time.

Own quality & output. Oversee production, procurement, and quality control to get the most from people and equipment.

Keep grain flowing. Partner with the elevator team to build and maintain grain inventories, and oversee the fleet that moves it.

Roll with the curveballs. Re-prioritize fast around equipment hiccups so the hens never miss a meal.

Get hands-on. Jump in to mix feed and run the mill alongside your team whenever it counts.

Work across the barn. Team up with live production and our nutritionist to boost flock performance and dial in every diet.

Lead the crew. Hire, train, and grow a great mill team - and keep safety front and center every day.

Think big. Track production data, help close the books, and shape the strategic direction of the mill.

Manage relationships with our 3rd Party Feed Mills.

GOOD TO KNOW

It's a real feed mill - here's the day-to-day:

On your feet, mostly standing

Lift up to 25 lbs

Moving machinery & dust

Occasional outdoor weather

Moderate noise

READY TO JOIN US?

Send your resume and tell us why you'd love to run our mill. We can't wait to meet you.

The Happy Egg Company is an equal-opportunity employer. This posting describes the general nature of the role and isn't a complete list of all duties. Reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities.

Requirements

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

A Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) plus 4-10 years of related experience.

Comfort with data and software - databases, Easy Automation, and Microsoft Office.

Solid math and practical problem-solving on a busy production floor.

Clear communication with everyone - from the mill floor to the leadership team.

Flexibility to adjust schedules and a readiness for an active, hands-on environment.
