To thrive as a Features Editor, you need strong writing, editing, and storytelling abilities, typically supported by a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), editorial planning tools, and style guides is essential. Excellent communication, creativity, and organizational skills help you collaborate with writers and manage multiple projects effectively. These competencies are vital to producing engaging, high-quality features that align with publication standards and audience interests.

What Is a Features Editor?

A features editor oversees the features section of magazines, newspapers, or other print and digital publications. As a features editor, your job duties include assigning articles to writers, reading pitches from freelancers to find suitable pieces, and ensuring the features your publication runs are on topic, well-written, and informative. You also research and write content and edit articles before going to press. Qualifications for this career typically include a bachelor’s degree in journalism or media and experience as a writer, editor, or editorial assistant. Many features editors gain the skills relevant to editorial practices, such as adhering to style guides, working under tight deadlines, and managing other writers, over several years while working at a publication.

What are Features Editors?

Features Editors are journalists who oversee the creation, editing, and publication of feature articles in newspapers, magazines, or online media. They are responsible for generating story ideas, assigning articles to writers, editing content for clarity and style, and ensuring that features are engaging and meet editorial standards. Features Editors often collaborate with other editors, writers, and designers to produce in-depth stories on a wide range of topics, such as culture, lifestyle, profiles, and human interest. Their goal is to produce compelling content that attracts and retains readers.

How much do feature editors make?

Feature editors typically earn a median annual salary of around $50,000 to $70,000, depending on experience, location, and the publication size. Salaries can vary widely, with more experienced editors or those working for major outlets earning higher compensation, and some may receive additional benefits or bonuses.

What does a features editor do?

These positions often rely on expertise, reputation, and the ability to manage multiple projects independently.

How does a Features Editor typically collaborate with writers and other editorial staff to shape compelling content?

A Features Editor works closely with writers to brainstorm, assign, and refine story ideas, providing detailed feedback to ensure each piece aligns with the publication's voice and standards. Collaboration often involves coordinating with section editors, copy editors, and designers to create engaging layouts and multimedia elements. Regular meetings and open communication channels are vital for managing deadlines and addressing challenges, such as balancing editorial priorities with creative storytelling. This collaborative environment helps produce high-quality features that resonate with readers and support the publication's goals.
