How much do family attorney jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 21, 2026, the average yearly pay for family attorney in the United States is $103,761.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $78,000.00 and $122,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Do lawyers make $500,000 a year?

Family attorneys' salaries vary widely based on experience, location, and case complexity. While some top earners in large firms or specialized practices can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, most family lawyers earn significantly less, with median salaries typically ranging from $50,000 to $120,000 per year.

What are family attorneys?

Family attorneys are legal professionals who specialize in matters related to family law. This includes representing clients in cases such as divorce, child custody, adoption, spousal support, and domestic violence. They provide legal advice, prepare legal documents, and represent clients in court or negotiations. Family attorneys help clients navigate complex legal issues that impact families and ensure their rights and interests are protected.

What are some common challenges Family Attorneys face when managing multiple cases?

Family Attorneys often handle several cases simultaneously, each with its own complexities and emotional dynamics. Balancing sensitive client needs, court deadlines, and extensive documentation can be challenging. Effective time management, strong organizational skills, and clear communication are essential for staying on top of each case and ensuring that clients feel supported throughout the legal process. Additionally, attorneys frequently collaborate with paralegals, other attorneys, and sometimes social workers to provide the best outcomes for families.

Is there a high demand for family lawyers?

Family attorneys are in steady demand due to ongoing legal needs related to divorce, child custody, and adoption. Employment opportunities can vary by region and economic conditions, but overall, the field remains relatively stable with consistent case volume. Strong communication and negotiation skills are essential for success in this area.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Family Attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Family Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, and a thorough understanding of family law statutes and procedures. Experience with legal research databases, case management software, and e-filing systems is typically required. Strong negotiation, empathy, and interpersonal communication skills help build client trust and effectively resolve sensitive disputes. These abilities are crucial for navigating complex family cases, advocating for clients, and achieving favorable legal outcomes.

What is the difference between Family Attorney vs Divorce Lawyer?

While both Family Attorneys and Divorce Lawyers handle family law cases, Family Attorneys offer a broader range of services including custody, adoption, and other family matters. Divorce Lawyers specialize mainly in divorce proceedings and related issues. Choosing between them depends on your specific legal needs within family law.

Where do family lawyers get paid the most?

Family lawyers tend to earn higher salaries in regions with a higher cost of living and greater demand for legal services, such as major metropolitan areas. Factors like experience, specialization in complex family law cases, and working for large firms or in private practice can also increase earning potential.

How to make $500,000 as a lawyer?

Family attorneys can reach high earnings by gaining extensive experience, building a strong client base, and specializing in high-value cases such as divorce settlements or estate planning. Increasing billable hours, developing a reputation, and working in affluent areas or large firms can also boost income. Advanced certifications and a focus on complex legal matters contribute to higher earning potential.

Job description

Contract Family Attorney - Fully Remote in Washington (10-20 Hours/Week)

No one wins in divorce court. Call a Truce.

Stop scrolling if you are a skilled Washington family law attorney looking for a meaningful, high-impact contract opportunity that prioritizes collaboration, client well-being, and flexibility.

If youโ€™re committed to a healthier, part-time way to practice, Truce Law is the place for you. We are a fully remote firm operating within Washington state and are seeking an experienced attorney for a consistent, flexible, part-time role.

Why Attorneys Contract with Truce Law (Compensation & Flexibility)

We are looking for a dedicated contractor to provide high-quality legal support on a flexible, part-time basis.

  • Contract Rate:ย $150 per billed hour.
  • Target Hours:ย 10โ€“20 hours per week,ย offering excellent flexibility for your existing schedule.
  • Fully Remote:ย Practice from anywhere within Washington state.
  • Support:ย Access to firm-provided systems and support staff (paralegals, legal assistants, billing team) to ensure efficiency and focus on legal work.
  • Collaboration:ย Join a supportive team of experienced attorneys dedicated to collaborative strategy and reducing conflict.

Note: As this is a contract position, the attorney will not receive firm benefits, including health insurance, paid time off, or 401(k) contributions.

Our "Truce Mindset" in Practice

Our "Truce Mindset" guides every role at Truce Law. It means we consistently prioritize long-term relational health and sustainable efficiency over short-term gratification or conflict. For a contract attorney, this commitment means focusing your limited, high-value time on work that promotes resolution:

  • Foresight over Expedience:ย You help clients redirect their focus toward long-term peace and co-parenting stability, ensuring the legal strategy is truly aligned with firm values and reduces conflict down the line.
  • Constructive Communication:ย You focus on preserving dignityโ€”even when dealing with difficult factsโ€”by ensuring all communication is professional and centered on legal solutions, leading to smoother negotiations and better client outcomes.
  • Prioritizing Sustainable Health:ย You leverage the support staff by proactively and effectively delegating research, drafting, and administrative tasks to the paralegal and legal assistant working alongside you, maximizing the capacity of the entire legal pod.

Compensation:

$150 hourly

Responsibilities:

What Outcomes You Will Achieve: Champion Collaboration

Your role centers on applying your expertise to guide clients through thoughtful, conflict-reducing solutions, backed by a strong support team, within your contracted hours.

  • Lead with Negotiation: Develop thoughtful strategies to meet client goals, prioritizing negotiation and settlement to achieve stable futures.
  • Conflict-Reduction: Actively pursue and implement collaborative solutions, minimizing the need for adversarial court proceedings.
  • Advocate Responsibly: Represent clients in court when necessary, maintaining the firm's commitment to respect and long-term resolution.
  • High-Quality Output: Review and finalize all legal documentation (pleadings, motions, agreements, judgments, and orders) efficiently.
  • Mentorship & Support: Work closely and collaboratively with other firm attorneys and the assigned support team (paralegal and legal assistant) on case strategy and execution.

Qualifications:

Who Weโ€™re Looking For: The Collaborative Advocate

You are a contract professional committed to both excellence and empathy who can manage your time and workload effectively within a flexible structure.

  • Experience & Licensure: Current Washington State Bar license with 5+ years of family law experience.
  • The Truce Mindset: Demonstrably collaborative, growth-minded, and empathetic approach to law and colleagues.
  • Communication Mastery: Strong communication, organizational, and truly client-centered skills.
  • Independence & Reliability: Proven ability to manage a part-time workload, meet deadlines, and work independently in a remote environment while maintaining consistent communication.
  • Team Focused: Motivated to advocate for clientsโ€™ best long-term interests while valuing teamwork and professional development.
