What is a fabric architect?

A Fabric Architect is a specialized professional who designs, develops, and manages data fabric architectures within an organization. They are responsible for integrating data sources, ensuring seamless data flow, and optimizing data management solutions across complex IT environments. Fabric Architects play a critical role in enabling data accessibility, consistency, and security, often working with cloud, hybrid, and on-premises systems. Their expertise helps organizations leverage data more efficiently for analytics, business intelligence, and digital transformation initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fabric architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fabric Architect, you need a strong background in textile engineering, material science, and design principles, often supported by a relevant degree or industry experience. Familiarity with CAD software, textile testing equipment, and knowledge of sustainable manufacturing processes are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills for innovating and meeting client specifications. These skills ensure the development of high-quality, functional, and aesthetically pleasing fabrics that meet both technical and market demands.

How does a fabric architect typically collaborate with network engineering and security teams during infrastructure projects?

A Fabric Architect works closely with network engineering and security teams to design and implement scalable and secure network fabrics. Collaboration often involves joint planning sessions to align on technical requirements, regular reviews to ensure that fabric designs meet security and compliance standards, and troubleshooting sessions to address integration challenges. The Fabric Architect ensures that the proposed architecture supports both performance and security objectives, often serving as a bridge between different departments to facilitate smooth project execution.

  • Partner with cross-functional technical and business teams to design modern data platforms aligned to business outcomes, performance requirements, and security standards.
  • Lead client discovery, data landscape assessments, and modernization roadmaps to align technical strategy with organizational goals.
  • Define technical workstreams, milestones, and dependencies for data platform projects in collaboration with project managers.
  • Produce high-quality architecture deliverables including reference architectures, data models, pipeline designs, governance frameworks, and operational runbooks.
  • Provide technical oversight for multi-workstream teams to ensure alignment, quality, and successful delivery.

  • Validate solutions for sustainability, performance, compliance, and cost-effectiveness before handoff to delivery.
  • Maintain expert-level knowledge of Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL, Power BI, Databricks, and modern data architecture patterns.
  • Support go-to-market initiatives through enablement content, partner alignment, and participation in strategic client meetings.
  • Ensure a seamless transition from pre-sales to delivery through disciplined documentation and communication practices.
  • Contribute to pipeline growth by shaping data-related offerings and influencing key customer opportunities.

  • Strengthen the data consulting practice by mentoring team members, improving documentation, and enhancing repeatable delivery methods.
  • Champion ivision’s partnership ecosystem—especially Microsoft—by maintaining current expertise and supporting partner initiatives and certifications.
  • Improve internal methodologies related to data architecture, Fabric delivery, cost modeling, and governance.
  • Serve as SME for Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data, Power BI, and related technologies to support internal training and offering development.
