What is a fabric architect?

A Fabric Architect is a specialized professional who designs, develops, and manages data fabric architectures within an organization. They are responsible for integrating data sources, ensuring seamless data flow, and optimizing data management solutions across complex IT environments. Fabric Architects play a critical role in enabling data accessibility, consistency, and security, often working with cloud, hybrid, and on-premises systems. Their expertise helps organizations leverage data more efficiently for analytics, business intelligence, and digital transformation initiatives.

How does a fabric architect typically collaborate with network engineering and security teams during infrastructure projects?

A Fabric Architect works closely with network engineering and security teams to design and implement scalable and secure network fabrics. Collaboration often involves joint planning sessions to align on technical requirements, regular reviews to ensure that fabric designs meet security and compliance standards, and troubleshooting sessions to address integration challenges. The Fabric Architect ensures that the proposed architecture supports both performance and security objectives, often serving as a bridge between different departments to facilitate smooth project execution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fabric architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fabric Architect, you need a strong background in textile engineering, material science, and design principles, often supported by a relevant degree or industry experience. Familiarity with CAD software, textile testing equipment, and knowledge of sustainable manufacturing processes are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills for innovating and meeting client specifications. These skills ensure the development of high-quality, functional, and aesthetically pleasing fabrics that meet both technical and market demands.

  • Lead small engagements or key workstreams within large, complex data and analytics transformations across industries
  • Design and implement cloud and hybrid data architectures, migration approaches, and technology solutions across data and analytics platforms
  • Manage day-to-day stakeholder relationships and align technical delivery to business and program objectives
  • Oversee quality of team deliverables and recommendations while contributing to hands-on solution delivery across distributed teams
  • Support practice growth through proposal development and deal shaping, thought leadership and AI-driven accelerators, and coaching junior practitioners
  • Lead delivery of Microsoft Fabric implementation and migration engagements, applying practical, proven architecture and migration patterns across Lakehouse, Warehouse, and OneLake workloads
  • Own hands-on build of the Fabric environment and its unified data platform end-to-end across workloads, translating architecture decisions and recommendations into scalable, flexible, working implementations
  • Design and build out medallion (bronze/silver/gold) layers in Fabric, and implement role-based access control and data classification definitions
  • Stand up ETL/pipeline work using Spark Notebooks, Dataflow Gen2, Fabric Data Factory with close attention to lineage preservation
  • Advise across the full breadth of Fabric architecture - workspace organization/structure, CI/CD, data protection planes and best practices, capacity management, backup/DR strategy, and guidance on best fit Fabric items
  • Stay current with evolving data and analytics technology platform capabilities, proactively evaluating and applying new capabilities to client solutions

Qualifications

Required:

  • 6+ years experience with relevant technology project experience in data architecture, data engineering, enterprise architecture, or a related discipline

  • Experience implementing Fabric governance and security constructs, including role-based access control (RBAC), data classification, data protection best practices, and integration with Microsoft Purview for enterprise data governance
  • Experience with dimensional modeling and star schema design in support of semantic models and BI reporting
  • Working understanding of the latest Microsoft Fabric platform capabilities - such as Fabric IQ, Ontology, Graph, and Real-Time Intelligence - and how to apply them to deliver business value, including grounding agentic AI experiences in enterprise semantic and ontology layers
  • Experience building ETL/pipeline solutions using Fabric Notebooks and/or Dataflow Gen2, with attention to data lineage preservation, and with dbt for transformation orchestration and modeling workflows
  • Experience with Fabric platform architecture, including workspace organization/structure, CI/CD and deployment pipelines (e.g., Fabric Git integration and deployment pipelines across dev/test/prod), capacity management, and backup/DR strategy
  • Experience supporting deal pursuit and shaping activities, including defining architecture, migration patterns, and implementation approaches
