The University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout) is seeking applications fortheExtended/Virtual/Augmented Lab Coordinator.

XR LAB INFORMATION

The extended reality lab is a university-wide resource designed to elevate teaching, learning, and research through immersive technologies such as XR, AR, and VR. Rooted in UW-Stout's polytechnic mission, the lab empowers students, faculty, and industry partners to explore, create, and innovate with cuttingedge tools that transform instructional experiences. Its goals include supporting multidisciplinary immersive learning, driving faculty collaboration and innovation, expanding student skill development, fostering community and industry engagement, and enabling globally connected, boundaryless education-ultimately serving as a launchpad for inclusive, futureready learning environments. The lab is scheduled to open in Fall 2026 with an anticipated start date for this position mid-April of 2026.

PURPOSE

The lab coordinator designs, develops, and enhances instructional activities and programs within the XR Lab, applying learning theory and instructional design models to support innovative teaching and learning. Manages day-to-day lab operations to ensure accessibility for students and faculty, and coordinates with instructional design, library, Office of Corporate Relations and Economic Engagement (OCREE), and other academic units to foster cross-campus collaboration and effective use of lab resources. Reports to the Director of Multimodal Instructional Support; housed in Library.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum / Required

  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design earned by start date, educational technology, computer science, or related field
  • Experience with XR technologies in educational settings
  • Evidence of strong collaboration skills and work with cross functional teams
  • Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills

Highly Desired/Preferred

  • Master's degree in a related field
  • Experience with XR development platforms (Unity, Unreal Engine)

RESPONSIBILITIES

Educational and Learning Support

  • Designs and develops engaging, effective learning experiences using AR/VR technologies, supporting face-to-face, blended, and online modalities.
  • Provides training and technical support directly to learners and faculty in classroom, lab, and distance learning settings.
  • Supports faculty development and engagement through training programs and professional development activities related to XR and instructional technology.
  • Consults with and assists staff and faculty in integrating XR technologies into course curricula, assignments, and assessments, ensuring alignment with current pedagogical practices and learning outcomes.

Campus Support

  • Coordinates with the library on open access/lab hours for students, faculty, etc.
  • Collaborates with academic colleges, OCREE, and other units to support applied research, curriculum innovation, and the use of the lab as a campus-wide resource.
  • Networks with other campus lab managers, technicians, and Learning & Information Technology (LIT) staff to share best practices and maintain high standards for instructional technology.

Lab and Equipment Management

  • Maintains and updates lab equipment, researches and acquires new learning resources and technologies, and submits modernization requests in coordination with LIT, the Library Director, and the Director of Multimodal Instructional Supports.
  • Analyzes, tests, troubleshoots, and resolves issues related to learning technologies, providing feedback and recommendations for improvement.
  • Manages open lab hours.
  • May oversee the scheduling and development of student workers.
