At Expedia Group, we help travelers explore the world, one journey at a time. As a global travel company powered by passionate people, trusted partnerships, and leading technology, we connect travelers, partners, and advertisers through our consumer brands, B2B network, and travel advertising business.

Here, you'll do meaningful work that helps millions of people discover, book, and experience travel with more ease, confidence, and joy. Our five Behaviors-Traveler First, Think Big, Operate with Excellence, Ownership Mindset, and Succeed Together-help foster a supportive environment where people can grow their careers and have the flexibility, benefits, and support to do their best work. Join us and build for travelers everywhere.

Introduction to the Team

Our Technology Team partners with teams across Expedia Group to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.

This Senior Software Development Engineer role is part of the Air Supply team which sits within our Technology division. Air Supply unifies and elevates Expedia Group’s air supply platform across brands and partners, deepening integrations with airline and distribution systems (such as NDC and aggregators) to deliver a trusted, high‑converting, and cost‑efficient air shopping and booking experience. In this role, you will own and evolve complex, mission‑critical air supply services end to end—from technical design and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and ongoing optimization—to improve reliability, scale, and traveler outcomes across our global air marketplace.

In this role, you will:
  • Design, build, and evolve backend services and customer experiences in Java, including system design (LLD), API design, and data modeling for scalable, secure, and reliable solutions.

  • Implement high‑quality backend code and supporting service components in Java, ensuring maintainability, observability, and operational excellence across multiple services and domains.

  • Collaborate with product, design, and partner engineering teams to translate business and customer requirements into robust backend solutions and reusable service integrations.

  • Own and improve the end‑to‑end lifecycle of backend services and features, including development, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, and incident resolution.

  • Apply data‑driven approaches to prioritize work, validate hypotheses, and continuously optimize service performance, reliability, and user experience across Java-based systems.

  • Safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve outcomes, including familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience.

  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience building and operating production backend or full‑stack software services in a team environment, with substantial experience in Java.

  • Proven ownership of backend services or components, including responsibility for design, implementation, quality, deployment, and operational health within a product or domain area.

  • Proficiency in core software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, system design (LLD), API design, and data modeling, with hands‑on application in Java-based systems.

  • Hands‑on experience with modern web technologies, frameworks, and service architectures on the backend (e.g., microservices, RESTful APIs), and familiarity with using AI-driven tools or workflows to enhance developer productivity or service capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience designing and evolving multi‑service or multi‑component backend architectures in Java, including well‑structured APIs, data models, and integration patterns across systems.

  • Demonstrated track record driving technical improvements at scale for Java services, such as performance tuning, resilience hardening, or reliability engineering for high‑traffic, latency‑sensitive workloads.

  • Strong focus on operational excellence for backend services, including instrumentation, observability, alerting, and participation in on‑call or incident response to improve long‑term service health.

  • Ability to leverage experimentation, A/B testing, or analytics to make informed technical and product decisions and to validate the impact of delivered backend features and service optimizations.

  • Experience integrating or extending AI/ML‑enabled capabilities into backend services, including responsible use of AI-driven components in Java-based solutions and guiding teams on effective, safe adoption of AI tooling for code quality, testing, and operations.

The total cash range for this position in Seattle is $184,500.00 to $258,000.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $295,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
