Job description

Agile Six is a people-first, remote-work company that serves shoulder-to-shoulder with federal agencies to find innovative, human-centered solutions. We build better by putting people first. We are animated by our core values of Purpose, Wholeness, Trust, Self-Management and Inclusion. We deliver our solutions in autonomous teams of self-managed professionals (no managers here!) who genuinely care about each other and the work. We know that's our company's purpose - and that we can only achieve it by supporting a culture where people feel valued, self-managed, and love to come to work.

The Role

Agile Six is looking for a Fullstack Engineer (React/Ruby) to join a cross-functional team working with the Department of Veterans Affairs on an integrated patient portal experience on VA.gov. The goal of our team's work is to improve Veterans' digital experience by giving them one place to easily manage their VA health care, community care, disability benefits, and other information.

This role will serve as an individual contributor and be assigned to a designated product, potentially supporting development on adjacent product teams within the project. Fullstack engineers partner closely with the team's Engineering Lead to implement standards and best practices, and work closely with team members to support the development of a cohesive user experience across web and mobile platforms.

The Period of Performance for this contract expires on April 16, 2027. There is a strong likelihood we will continue this work under a follow-on contract beyond April 16th, but we won't have clarity on the continuation path until closer to that date.

Responsibilities
  • Build accessible, performant, and scalable frontend and backend features in an open-source ecosystem using React, Ruby on Rails, and other industry-standard languages and frameworks.
  • Develop user-facing features with React (TypeScript/JavaScript), following USWDS design patterns and VA API/FHIR standards where applicable.
  • Write and maintain 100% automated test coverage (unit, integration, functional, load, and accessibility) for all delivered features.
  • Integrate with VA APIs and backend services to ensure accurate, secure data rendering and discoverability via the Lighthouse API Hub.
  • Support the migration and retirement of legacy systems, ensuring continuity of content and functionality.
  • Contribute to full-stack development across healthcare features (e.g., secure messaging, medical records, medications) with a focus on interoperability and user-centered design.
  • Monitor and triage application performance issues daily using tools like Datadog, and respond to incidents according to VA-defined severity levels.
  • Prevent and resolve silent failures through robust error handling, user notification mechanisms, and backend transaction validation.
  • Participate in pair programming, peer reviews, and blameless post-mortems, incorporating learnings and promoting engineering excellence.
  • Continuously integrate and deploy code using VA Platform tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and reusable infrastructure components across VA.gov and VA Mobile.
  • Uphold Zero Trust security principles and ensure sensitive data is never exposed in source code; deliver all non-sensitive code to open-source repositories.
  • Support the Engineering Community of Practice and broader Agile Six engineering culture through knowledgesharing, mentoring, and participation in internal initiatives.

We expect the responsibilities of this position to shift and grow organically over time, in response to considerations such as the team's needs and strengths, the unique strengths and interests of the selected candidate, and an evolving understanding of the delivery environment.

Basic qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional engineering experience, demonstrating indepth knowledge in at least one front end and one back end technology stack (e.g. Ruby and React).
  • 3+ years of recent production experience with React and JavaScript/TypeScript
  • 1+ year of production experience with Ruby on Rails
  • Ability to leverage AI-assisted development tools (for this project, CoPilot specifically) to responsibly to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and support experimentation per evolving client AI tooling expectations
  • Handson experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, or similar).
  • Experience with measurement and monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog) and a strong understanding of application observability.
  • Familiarity with secure development best practices and Zero Trust principles; ability to safeguard sensitive data while working in an opensource environment.
Preferred qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Experience with React Native
  • Experience leveraging AI tools and services to create and deliver software to production in a professional capacity.
  • Experience with health-related services and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards.
  • Professional experience delivering software for or within federal agencies, especially the VA.
  • Familiarity with the VA.gov Platform, VA Mobile Platform, and Lighthouse delivery infrastructure.
  • Prior contributions to opensource projects and/or publicly shared technical documentation.
  • You are a U.S. Veteran. As a service-disabled veteran-owned small business, we recognize the transition to civilian life can be tricky, and welcome and encourage Veterans to apply

At Agile Six, we are committed to building teams that represent a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. Even if you don't meet every requirement, we encourage you to apply. We're eager to meet people who believe in our mission and who can contribute to our team in a variety of ways.

Salary and Sixer Benefits

As a small organization and government contractor, the roles we hire for depend on the contracts we hold and the funding available. Salaries at Agile Six are tied to predefined peer groups based on the staffing plans we sell to clients. People in the same peer group are paid within 2.5% of the peer group's salary mean, even when their project work differs.

We post fixed, non-negotiable salaries so that you know what to expect, and to remove the bias and inequity that often show up in salary negotiations. We also periodically raise the salary of all Sixers to keep pace with market conditions.

For more information about our Pay and Equity practices, please contact our Recruitment team.

The salary for this position is $116,132.

Our benefits are designed to reinforce our core values of Wholeness, Self Management and Inclusion. The following benefits are available to all employees. We respect that only you know what balance means for your life and season. While we offer support from coaches, we expect you to own your wholeness, show up for work whole, and go home to your family the same. You will be seen, heard and valued. We expect you to offer the same for your colleagues, be kind (not bossy), be caring (not directive) and ready to participate in a state of flow. We mean it when we say "We build better by putting people first".
