Essential Functions

Clinical Quality & Resident Care 

  • Provides overall leadership and oversight of the nursing department to ensure high-quality resident care  
  • Accountable for clinical outcomes, including prevention and management of falls, pressure injuries, infections, and hospital readmissions  
  • Ensures physicians and clinical providers conduct visits as required and that care is delivered in accordance with resident needs  
  • Conducts regular rounds to monitor resident care, staff performance, and overall environment of care  
  • Oversees documentation practices to ensure accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance of resident records  
  • May provide direct care as needed 


Regulatory Compliance & Survey Readiness 

  • Maintains continuous survey readiness and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations  
  • Leads survey preparation, participates in surveys, and oversees implementation of plans of correction  
  • Oversees incident reporting, investigations, and follow-up actions in accordance with regulatory requirements  
  • Ensures compliance with all organizational policies, procedures, and the compliance program  


Quality Improvement & Infection Control 

  • Leads QAPI and performance improvement initiatives for the nursing department utilizing data, metrics, and trends to drive decision-making and improve outcomes  
  • Oversees infection prevention and control programs to ensure compliance and minimize risk. May be the center Infection Preventionist. 


Workforce Leadership & Development 

  • Develops, leads, and retains a high-performing nursing team through effective hiring, coaching, and performance management  
  • Oversees staffing and scheduling to ensure appropriate coverage while managing labor costs, overtime, and agency utilization  
  • Ensures orientation, onboarding, ongoing training, and competency development of nursing personnel  
  • Ensures maintenance of licensure and certification requirements for all nursing personnel, including CPR certification for all licensed nursing personnel 
  • Ensures fair and consistent application of disciplinary processes and performance evaluations  


Operations & Financial Management 

  • Ensures necessary equipment, supplies, and staffing levels are available to support quality care delivery  
  • Participates in budget development for the nursing department, medical, nursing and central supplies. 
  • Manages nursing department operations within budget, including labor and supply expenses  


Leadership, Collaboration & Culture 

  • Partners with the Executive Director and interdisciplinary team to drive clinical, operational, and financial performance  
  • Acts in an administrative capacity in the absence of the Executive Director 
  • Collaborates with internal and external partners to improve quality of care and operational outcomes  
  • Promotes a culture of accountability, professionalism, safety, and resident-centered care  
  • Ensures high standards of customer service for residents, families, and staff  
  • Treats residents, families, visitors, and staff with courtesy and respect  

Professional Responsibilities 

  • Represents the organization in professional, community, and marketing activities as appropriate  
  • Attends and participates in required meetings, committees, training, and organizational initiatives  
  • May provide direct nursing care as needed and serve in an administrative capacity in the absence of the Executive Director

Safety  

  • Knows and follows North Shore Health rules 
  • Follows North Shore Health dress and hygiene policies 
  • Demonstrates proper use of equipment 
  • Reports equipment needs or repairs 
  • Follows North Shore Health smoking policies 
  • Reports and documents any incidents or accidents of residents, staff or visitors to the appropriate North Shore Health Support Center personnel 
  • Reports all hazardous conditions/equipment to Executive Director 
  • Uses required protective equipment  
  • Follows infection control standards, policies and procedures 

Resident Rights  

  • Knows Resident Rights 
  • Helps the residents/patients exercise and/or protect their rights 
  • Maintains confidentiality of resident/patient and employee information 

HIPAA  

  • Follows and adheres to North Shore Health's policies and procedures implementing HIPAA requirements for the privacy and security of protected health information 
  • Uses and/or discloses only minimum amount of Protected Health Information necessary to complete assigned tasks  
  • Reports all suspected violations of the company's HIPAA policies or procedures to North Shore Health's Chief Compliance Officer. 

Work Environment/Physical Requirements 

The responsibilities of this position may involve significant travel and physical activities including standing, occasional lifting (up to 50 pounds unassisted), bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and twisting. Lifting and/or transferring some residents will require use of a lifting device and/or assistance from other staff.  

Required Qualifications 

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with active, unrestricted license in the state 
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program 
  • Strong knowledge of long-term care regulations and clinical practices 
  • Current CPR certification 


Preferred Qualifications 

  • Prior experience as a Director of Nursing or Assistant Director of Nursing 
  • Demonstrated experience with survey readiness and regulatory compliance 
  • Experience managing staffing, budgets, and operational performance
