This full-time, 12-month position collaborates closely with campus partners, including Academic and Student Affairs and Human Resources, to support a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to threat assessment and intervention. As the Case Manager, you will lead and support behavioral threat assessments using structured professional judgment-conducting intake, gathering and analyzing information, assessing risk, and documenting cases. You will coordinate case reviews, develop and implement individualized management strategies, and work with stakeholders to monitor and reduce risk. Your attention to detail will ensure accurate records, timely follow-up, and compliance with institutional policies and applicable laws.
This role may include on-call responsibilities to respond to emerging concerns and provide operational support to the Behavior Assessment Team. You will also contribute to prevention, consultation, and training initiatives that promote early identification, reporting, and intervention. Working with students, employees, and non-affiliated individuals, you will help foster a safer campus environment grounded in best practices.
Additional duties include:
Play a central role in identifying and addressing potential risks to campus safety. You will conduct behavioral threat assessments using a structured, evidence-informed approach to evaluate concerning behaviors, risk factors, and potential for harm. In partnership with campus stakeholders, you'll develop and implement individualized management strategies that focus on risk reduction, stabilization, and prevention. This includes safety planning with potential victims and providing expert consultation to faculty, staff, and students on warning signs, concerning behaviors, and risk indicators. You will also coordinate multidisciplinary interventions and connect individuals to appropriate campus and community resources.
Bring your analytical skills and professional expertise to dynamic case management work. You will gather and synthesize behavioral and contextual information to assess and monitor risk over time, recognizing that situations evolve. Using best practices in threat assessment, you'll maintain clear, objective documentation and ensure cases are actively managed, with strategies adjusted as needed to address changes in behavior or circumstances.
Be part of a highly collaborative team committed to prevention and coordinated response. As an active member of the Behavioral Assessment Team (BAT) and the NC State Cares Team, you'll contribute to case reviews and planning efforts. You will work closely with partners across campus-including General Counsel, Counseling Services, Employee Relations, Student Conduct, and University Police-to ensure responses are thoughtful, legally sound, and focused on safety. You'll also engage with external agencies and law enforcement when situations require elevated response.
Help shape a proactive culture of safety and awareness. You will support the development and delivery of training and outreach initiatives that empower the campus community to recognize and report concerning behaviors early. Your work will contribute to broader institutional efforts to prevent targeted violence, workplace violence, and other forms of harm through education, engagement, and early intervention.
- Required post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
- Demonstrated experience conducting suicide risk assessments, violence risk assessments, and/or behavioral threat assessments, and developing individualized management strategies to mitigate risk and prevent escalation.
- Proven ability to exercise sound professional judgment in complex, ambiguous, or high-risk situations, including the ability to make informed decisions autonomously within established protocols.
- Experience establishing and maintaining collaborative partnerships with campus stakeholders and external community agencies to support coordinated threat management and intervention efforts.
- Ability to function effectively within a multidisciplinary Behavioral Assessment Team (BAT) or similar team-based environment, contributing to shared case formulation and management planning.
- Experience developing and delivering training curricula on topics such as behavioral threat assessment and management, targeted violence prevention, workplace violence prevention, suicide prevention, domestic violence awareness, child protection, classroom behavior management, and managing concerning or disruptive behaviors.
- Experience developing outreach and prevention materials designed to promote awareness, early identification, and reporting of behaviors of concern.
- Direct case management experience, including intake, documentation, monitoring, follow-up, and coordination of intervention strategies.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and SPSS (or similar data analysis platforms).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document cases objectively and present risk formulations and recommendations clearly.
- Demonstrated competence in data tracking, records management, and maintaining accurate, confidential case documentation consistent with legal and ethical standards.
- Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselor Education, Mental Health, or a closely related behavioral health or public safety field.
- Certified Threat Manager (CTM)
- Relevant clinical licensure (e.g., LSW, LCSW, LPC, or equivalent) with experience conducting violence risk assessments and suicide risk assessments.
- Clinical experience assessing and managing high-risk or complex cases involving targeted violence, self-harm, grievance-fueled violence, or escalating behaviors of concern.
- Experience conducting behavioral threat assessments and implementing threat management strategies within a structured professional judgment (SPJ) framework.
- Training credentials such as Department of Homeland Security National Threat Evaluation and Reporting (NTER) Certified Master Trainer.
- Experience in digital threat assessment, including evaluation of online behaviors, social media activity, leakage, and concerning communications.
- Professional experience addressing interpersonal violence, including domestic violence, stalking, harassment, or related behaviors, through assessment, investigation, or victim advocacy.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams, including Behavioral Assessment Teams (BATs) or similar collaborative models.
- Experience in a higher education environment, including familiarity with student conduct, employee relations, Title IX, or campus safety frameworks.
- Experience using case management database systems for documentation, tracking, and case monitoring.
- Experience collaborating with Human Resources on employee-related behavioral risk or workplace conduct concerns.
- Working knowledge of Canva, WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms.
- Valid DL required.
- A valid North Carolina driver's license within 60 days of start date.
