Exchange Subject Matter Expert (TS/SCI)

Location: Washington, DC (On-site)
Clearance: TS/SCI

Description:

Metric5 is seeking a highly experienced Exchange Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support the Cloud Team, providing technical leadership for the administration, modernization, and migration of Microsoft Exchange in a classified environment. This role will serve as the primary Exchange authority, supporting a mission-critical on-premises Exchange infrastructure and leading efforts to transition to Exchange Online via a hybrid deployment model.

The ideal candidate will have deep, hands-on experience supporting Exchange in classified environments, with a strong understanding of the constraints associated with classified networks and a proven ability to plan and execute Exchange hybrid configurations and migrations.

This is a hands-on engineering role requiring on-site presence five days per week at the client location in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities:

Exchange Architecture, Administration, and Migration

  • Serve as the technical lead and SME for Microsoft Exchange in a classified environment
  • Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot on-premises Exchange Server (2016/2019 or equivalent)
  • Design, implement, and support Exchange hybrid configurations to enable migration from on-prem Exchange to Exchange Online
  • Lead planning and execution of mailbox, service, and configuration migrations to Exchange Online while minimizing operational risk
  • Manage mail flow, transport rules, certificates, DAGs, and high availability configurations
  • Perform Exchange upgrades, patching, and lifecycle management

Security, Compliance, and Reliability

  • Ensure Exchange configurations comply with STIGs, RMF, and organizational security requirements
  • Partner with cybersecurity teams to implement secure authentication, certificate management, and access controls
  • Support audits, vulnerability remediation, and continuous compliance efforts in classified environments
  • Lead troubleshooting and resolution of complex Exchange-related incidents and outages

Collaboration, Documentation, and Technical Guidance

  • Collaborate with Cloud, systems, and cybersecurity teams, as well as customer stakeholders, to align Exchange solutions with mission needs
  • Provide technical recommendations, risk assessments, and migration strategies to leadership and the customer
  • Develop and maintain architecture documentation, SOPs, and operational runbooks
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor for Exchange-related decisions and modernization efforts

Required Qualifications:

  • Active TS/SCI clearance (required)
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience administering Microsoft Exchange in enterprise environments
  • Strong experience supporting Exchange in classified, high-side, or air-gapped networks
  • Proven experience designing and implementing Exchange hybrid environments and migrating from on-prem Exchange to Exchange Online
  • In-depth knowledge of Exchange Server architecture and administration
  • Experience with Active Directory and identity integration
  • Knowledge of mail flow, transport rules, and security controls
  • Experience with certificates, PKI, and authentication mechanisms
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to operate as the Exchange technical authority

Desired / Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Exchange STIG implementation and RMF processes
  • PowerShell scripting for Exchange administration and automation
  • Experience supporting highly available, mission-critical messaging environments
  • Prior experience advising government customers or senior leadership on Exchange strategy and risk

Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft 365, or security-related certifications preferred
