Football - Varsity Assistant Coach

Position Type: Stipend / Seasonal
Reports To: Head Varsity Coach, Athletic Director
School Level: High School (Grades 9-12)

Position Overview

The High School Varsity Assistant Coach supports the Head Varsity Coach in all aspects of the athletic program. This position plays a vital role in the development of student-athletes by promoting skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and character consistent with the mission and values of the school.

The Assistant Coach is expected to be a positive role model, effective communicator, and collaborative member of the coaching staff who prioritizes student-athlete well-being, academic success, and program integrity.


Primary Responsibilities

Coaching & Player Development

  • Assist in planning and conducting ย ย ย ย ย effective practices, training sessions, and game-day preparation
  • Provide ย ย ย ย ย technical instruction and feedback to student-athletes to support skill ย ย ย ย ย development and performance
  • Assist ย ย ย ย ย with game strategy, scouting, film review, and in-game adjustments
  • Supervise ย ย ย ย ย and support student-athletes during practices, competitions, team travel, ย ย ย ย ย and school-related activities

Program Support

  • Support the Head Coach in maintaining ย ย ย ย ย a positive, disciplined, and team-first culture
  • Assist ย ย ย ย ย with offseason programs, camps, and player development initiatives as ย ย ย ย ย assigned
  • Help ย ย ย ย ย enforce team rules, school policies, and athletic department expectations ย ย ย ย ย consistently
  • Communicate ย ย ย ย ย effectively with athletes, parents, coaching staff, and athletic ย ย ย ย ย administration

Student-Athlete Welfare

  • Promote academic accountability and ย ย ย ย ย eligibility compliance
  • Support ย ย ย ย ย the physical, emotional, and social well-being of student-athletes
  • Follow ย ย ย ย ย all safety protocols, concussion procedures, and sport-specific guidelines
  • Model ย ย ย ย ย professionalism, respect, and ethical behavior at all times

Administrative & Operational Duties

  • Assist with equipment management, ย ย ย ย ย uniforms, and inventory
  • Support ย ย ย ย ย supervision of locker rooms and facilities before and after events
  • Assist ย ย ย ย ย with transportation, game-day logistics, and event operations as needed
  • Complete ย ย ย ย ย required training, certifications, and documentation in a timely manner

Requirements

ย Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or ย ย ย ย ย equivalent
  • Previous playing and/or coaching experience in ย ย ย ย ย the sport (preferred at high school or collegiate level)
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a ย ย ย ย ย coaching staff
  • Strong communication, leadership, and ย ย ย ย ย organizational skills
  • Commitment to school mission, values, and ย ย ย ย ย student development

Preferred

  • Prior high school coaching experience
  • Knowledge of IHSA (or applicable state association) ย ย ย ย ย rules and regulations
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to ย ย ย ย ย obtain)
  • Coaching education certifications or coursework

Expectations & Standards

  • Uphold school, conference, and ย ย ย ย ย state athletic association policies
  • Maintain professionalism in interactions with ย ย ย ย ย officials, opponents, parents, and administrators
  • Serve as a positive role model consistent with ย ย ย ย ย educational-based athletics
  • Successfully complete background checks and ย ย ย ย ย required training
