Job Summary
Multi-Language Learners (MLLs), sometimes referred to as English as a Second Language (ESL) students, face a unique set of challenges deeply rooted in systemic inequities in the classroom. Addressing these challenges and providing support for these 9th-12th grade students, recognizing and valuing the linguistic and cultural assets these students bring.
Students in English Language Learning classes, must show proficiency on the WIDA test each year for the state of Utah. Directed by a teacher, you would work with English Language Learning/MLL students on activities that would move their vocabulary, speaking, writing and reading skills forward, tracking their progress and working with small groups or individuals.
There are between 40-80 different languages spoken at East High. If you speak more than one language, it is always a bonus. This is a rewarding position to work with amazing and fabulous students. Come learn about these students and help them to grow with their English language skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Assist teacher in mentoring and tutoring students in rudimentary English skills for high-school aged students.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ability to read, write, and speak well in English.
Bilingual skills a plus!
Desire to work with high school age students from diverse backgrounds and
experiences.
Serve as a positive role model and mentor.
Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Minimum qualifications
Must have an SLCC Federal work-study award through SLCC's Financial Aid
office.
Must be able to earn a Work Study award.
Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester.
Must work at least 10 hours and no more than 20 a week during the semester
Must be comfortable talking with students, staff, and faculty.
Must have basic computer skills.
Program Associates may create their own work schedules within available hours at their school sites.
Must commit to attending an orientation and team meetings at the outset.
Must be able to leave campus and access the partner site using their preferred
transportation method.
Preferred Qualifications
Understanding of English language and usage.
Multi-language speaking is a significant benefit.
Experience teaching or tutoring.
Excellent listening, organization, and problem-solving skills.
Experience working with high-school age students.
