Summary:
The HCS Enterprise Analytics & Interoperability Developer - Epic Research supports one or more components of the end-to-end lifecycle of analytics, interoperability, and application solutions that enable research and related business functions across the health system. This includes, but is not limited to, planning, requirements definition, system design, development, testing, integration, implementation, optimization, and maintenance of new or existing functionality.
This role provides a high level of technical support for Epic Research and related Epic modules (e.g., Registration, Scheduling, Hospital Billing, Professional Billing, Ambulatory, Inpatient, Health Information Management) to ensure that changes are aligned across integrated applications. The analyst also delivers end user technical enablement and support, which may include high touch customer service, communications, and the creation of reusable knowledge assets such as documentation, reports, and training content.
The HCS Enterprise Analytics & Interoperability Developer - Epic Research is an individual contributor role that works under supervision.
Responsibilities:
Healthcare Analytics, Interoperability, and Application Support
  • Build, test, integrate, and maintain Epic Research solutions and related configuration (e.g., Flowsheets, Questionnaires, SmartForms, Smart Data Elements) to support approved research projects.
  • Develop, revise, and maintain reports and analytics to support the Epic Research application and other integrated applications, leveraging existing reusable data sources whenever possible.
  • Participate in extending Epic Research functionality to new sites and entities within UNC Health.
  • Plan for and participate in upgrades, patches, and revisions; build and implement required changes efficiently and safely.
  • Engage in technical support request fulfillment for Epic Research and associated tools, ensuring scalable, reusable, reliable, redundant, and recoverable systems and operations.
  • Participate in data governance and stewardship processes as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain clear, understandable documentation describing program development, configuration, modification, and troubleshooting; update system and support documentation as functionality, reports, and interfaces change.

Communication, Relationships, and Customer Service
  • Support departmental and organizational priorities in day-to-day work, including institutional goals related to research.
  • Collaborate closely with Epic teams (e.g., Registration and Scheduling, Hospital Billing, Professional Billing, Ambulatory, Inpatient Clinical, Health Information Management) and other stakeholders to ensure alignment across integrated applications.
  • Provide technical support and consultation to users in the research community and other internal customers using established contact and resolution tracking systems.
  • Communicate in a manner that is clear, concise, and politically and culturally sensitive, and maintain high service levels.
  • Work effectively in a team environment and demonstrate the ability to successfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • For Epic-focused positions, 2-4 years of directly related experience (e.g., Epic application support, healthcare IT, research systems) is preferred.
  • Experience with Epic Hospital Billing or Professional Billing and knowledge of hospital/professional billing operations desirable.
  • Experience with clinical trials or other biomedical research in a hospital setting desirable.
  • Experience with end user training is a plus.

  • Epic Research Clinical or Epic Research Billing certification highly preferred

Professional Experience Requirements:
โ€ข If a Bachelor's Degree in other field, requires two (2) years of experience.
โ€ข If a Bachelor's Degree in a STEM field (i.e. Engineering, Math, Computer Science, Analytics, etc.), then no years of experience is required.
โ€ข If Master's Degree, then no experience is required.
โ€ข If current certification in analytics, requires one (1) year of experience.
โ€ข If an Associate's Degree, requires four (4) years of experience.
โ€ข If High School Diploma, requires six (6) years of experience.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
  • Fundamental knowledge (basic proficiency) of relational databases
  • Fundamental knowledge (basic proficiency) of SQL (for all positions except Research, Admin, and Interop)
  • Understands the importance and has fundamental knowledge (basic proficiency) with leveraging existing reusable data sources for visualizations and analytics before creating their own. When creating new assets they have the ability to make it reusable, with help.
