Job description

About Charm
Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale, we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron.
Our carbon removal efforts began in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify, and Microsoft. Since then, we've scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, grown to over a hundred employees, and established three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Louisiana.
We're expanding our team of ambitious, creative, and hands-on problem solvers. We value psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning. We take calculated risks and treat mistakes as opportunities to improve. If you're excited about tackling big challenges, we encourage you to explore our company values.
Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust!
About the Role
Charm is seeking a Staff Industrial Site Development Engineer to lead the engineering, layout, and physical integration of our production facilities. This role serves as the engineering owner for the physical design of Charm's industrial sites-transforming process concepts into safe, maintainable, constructible, and scalable operating facilities.
You'll work across nearly every engineering discipline, partnering with Process Development, Mechanical Engineering, Civil & Structural Engineering, Facilities, Construction, Operations, Procurement, EPC contractors, equipment vendors, and regulatory agencies to ensure every facility functions as one integrated system. Rather than owning an individual process, you'll own how the entire facility comes together.
From concept development through commissioning, you'll make critical engineering decisions regarding equipment placement, utilities, site infrastructure, constructability, maintenance access, traffic flow, regulatory compliance, and future expansion. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving multidisciplinary industrial design challenges and wants to leave a lasting impact on the facilities that will enable Charm's long-term growth.
Your Responsibilities
  • Own the engineering, layout, and physical integration of Charm's industrial production facilities from concept through commissioning.
  • Develop and maintain integrated site layouts, including equipment placement, foundations, utilities, buildings, roadways, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Lead multidisciplinary coordination across process, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, controls, facilities, construction, and operations teams to deliver cohesive facility designs.
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables from EPC firms, consultants, and equipment vendors, ensuring technical quality, constructability, maintainability, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Make engineering decisions that balance safety, operability, constructability, cost, schedule, and long-term scalability.
  • Establish engineering standards, site design criteria, and best practices to support current and future facility development.
  • Support permitting and regulatory compliance by ensuring site designs meet applicable OSHA, environmental, and engineering code requirements and by providing technical support to permitting authorities when needed.
  • Provide field engineering support during construction, commissioning, and startup, including site walkdowns, responding to RFIs, resolving design issues, and verifying installations meet engineering intent.
  • Mentor engineers and designers through technical reviews, collaborative problem solving, and sharing engineering best practices.
  • Continuously improve Charm's industrial facilities by identifying opportunities to enhance safety, reliability, operability, maintainability, and capital efficiency.

You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Colorado Professional Engineer (PE) license with a civil engineering background, specializing in industrial site development and structural design.
  • 8+ years of experience designing or executing heavy industrial facilities.
  • Experience taking industrial projects from conceptual layout through detailed design and construction.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, controls, and process engineering.
  • Experience developing industrial equipment layouts, utility systems, and site infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of industrial design principles including constructability, maintainability, operability, and lifecycle planning.
  • Experience reviewing engineering deliverables produced by consultants, EPC firms, or equipment vendors.
  • Proficiency with industrial CAD platforms such as Onshape or Draftsight.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively across technical disciplines.

Bonus, if you Bring
  • Experience designing greenfield industrial facilities.
  • Experience with biomass processing, bulk solids handling, chemical processing, mining, renewable energy, or other heavy industrial systems.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, IBC, NFPA, ASCE, and other applicable engineering codes and standards.
  • Experience supporting industrial permitting activities.
  • Experience supporting field construction, commissioning, and startup.
  • Experience developing engineering standards or owner's design criteria.

$117,935 - $176,902 a year
What We Offer
  • Equity ownership through stock options
  • 100% employee healthcare premiums covered
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with multiple plan options
  • Employer-funded HSA contributions for eligible HDHP plans
  • Traditional and Roth 401(k) with a 50% match on contributions up to 6%
  • Paid leave, including parental and medical leave
  • PPE and workwear allowances
  • Annual professional development stipend
  • Employee recognition programs that celebrate impactful work and team contributions
  • Opportunities for internal growth, career development, and transition into climate from a range of industries and backgrounds

Our Commitment
Charm Industrial is an equal opportunity employer. We hire based on skills, experience, and passion for our mission. We're excited to grow our team with people who bring unique strengths and help us improve as a company.
At Charm, we may use AI-enabled tools to support certain aspects of the hiring process, including organizing candidate information and highlighting experience that may be relevant to a particular role. In a world where AI-assisted resumes, synthetic content, and deepfakes are increasingly common, these tools help our team navigate the process thoughtfully and efficiently. Every application and resume is reviewed by a member of our hiring team, and hiring decisions are made by people, not algorithms. Our recruiting process is designed to ensure candidates are evaluated fairly, consistently, and in alignment with our equal employment opportunity commitments. AI tools support our team's work, but they do not replace human judgment or determine hiring outcomes.
