Entry Level Tree Service information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Tree Service worker, and why are they important?

To excel as an Entry Level Tree Service worker, you need a basic understanding of tree care, physical fitness, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with chainsaws, climbing gear, and safety harnesses, as well as OSHA safety certifications, are often required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and a strong work ethic help individuals stand out in this physically demanding role. These skills ensure tasks are performed safely and efficiently, protecting both workers and property while delivering quality service.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level tree service workers, and how can they be addressed?

Entry-level tree service workers often encounter challenges such as adapting to physically demanding tasks, working safely at heights, and learning to use specialized equipment. To address these challenges, new employees should prioritize proper training, follow safety protocols, and communicate regularly with experienced team members. Many companies provide on-the-job training and mentorship, which helps new hires build confidence and skills while ensuring a supportive work environment.

What are entry level tree service jobs?

Entry level tree service jobs involve assisting with the maintenance, care, and removal of trees and shrubs. Typical tasks include trimming branches, clearing debris, operating basic equipment, and supporting more experienced arborists during tree removal or pruning projects. These positions are ideal for individuals with little to no prior experience, as on-the-job training is usually provided. Safety is a major focus, and workers are often taught how to use tools and protective gear properly. Entry level tree service roles can be physically demanding but offer a great way to start a career in arboriculture.

Job description

Groundperson (Utility / ROW Tree Crew)
Build a Career in the Field โ€” Not Just a Job
Riggs Tree Service is a leading force in Right-of-Way vegetation management, running a fleet of 800+ pieces of equipment and supporting major utility operations. We do not hire just anyone โ€” we bring on hard-working, safety-driven operators who know how to perform in the field and take pride in the work. If you have experience around chainsaws, chippers, and active job sites, and you are ready to be part of a high-performance crew, we want to talk to you.
Pay Range
Wage is negotiable based on experience.
Top pay for top hands.
What Youโ€™ll Be Doing
You will be the backbone of the crew โ€” keeping operations moving safely, efficiently, and professionally.
Equipment amp; Field Operations
  • Operate and support chainsaws and chippers in active job site conditions
  • Assist with tree felling, limbing, brush handling, and debris processing
  • Set up and maintain traffic control zones and safe work areas
  • Establish and maintain drop zones for cutting operations
Safety amp; Compliance (Non-Negotiable)
  • Follow all company safety standards, PPE requirements, and job briefings
  • Identify tree hazards, environmental risks, and unsafe conditions before they become problems
  • Prevent struck-by and equipment-related incidents through proper positioning and awareness
  • Maintain familiarity with SDS manuals and first aid procedures
Chipper amp; Equipment Responsibility
  • Perform daily inspections and pre-trip checks
  • Safely start, operate, and shut down chippers per SOP
  • Handle basic maintenance such as fluids, hoses, and components
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures without exception
Crew Support
  • Drag, stack, and feed brush safely and efficiently
  • Communicate clearly with operators, climbers, and supervisors
  • Support overall crew productivity and job site flow
What Weโ€™re Looking For
We are not looking for entry-level โ€” we are looking for people who can step in and perform.
  • Hands-on experience with chainsaws and/or chippers preferred
  • Utility, tree, construction, or other heavy outdoor work experience is a plus
  • Strong understanding of job site safety and PPE requirements
  • Ability to recognize hazards and think ahead in fast-moving environments
  • Team-first mindset with the ability to take direction and execute
  • First Aid/CPR is preferred, but not required
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work daily
Benefits
Riggs Tree Service offers a competitive benefits package, which may include:
  • Health insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off
  • Paid holidays
  • Advancement opportunities
Get Paid When You Want
Tired of waiting on payday?
With Payactiv, you may be able to access your earned wages before payday.
With Payactiv, you can:
  • Access earned wages as soon as your shift ends
  • Pay bills on time
  • Avoid overdraft fees, late fees, and high-interest loans
  • Stay in control of your finances
Your money. Your schedule.
Work Environment
  • Outdoor, physically demanding work in all weather conditions
  • Fast-paced utility and ROW job sites
  • Early mornings and long days โ€” real field work
Why Riggs
  • Work with a top-tier ROW vegetation management company
  • Be part of a crew that takes safety and performance seriously
  • Opportunity to grow into operator, climber, or leadership roles
  • Consistent, real-world work โ€” not seasonal uncertainty
Bottom Line
If you are the kind of person who shows up ready to work, understands that safety is part of the job, and takes pride in doing things the right way, this is where you build something long-term.
