Located on GW's campus in downtown D.C., The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum celebrates art, history and world cultures. Public programs and exhibitions are inspired by diverse collections of global textiles and local history. Resources for students and scholars include the peer-reviewed The Textile Museum Journal, the Cotsen Textile Traces Study Center and the Albert H. Small Center for National Capital Area Studies.
Position Specific Summary
This student position is for the role of visitor experience assistant at the museum. VE assistants greet and welcome visitors at the front desk and in the Artisans Gallery. They provide exceptional customer service and must be well versed on the museum's exhibitions, collections, programs and merchandise. Visitor experience assistants are responsible for completing opening and closing procedures, handling incoming calls and queries, and providing program support to the Education Department.
Greet visitors and serve as the first point of contact for visitor information
Inform visitors about ways to engage with the museum through programs,
communications and membership
Answer phones and respond to messages and queries
Record daily visitors and donations
Process credit- and debit-card donations
Keep collateral and reading material on the first floor tidy and well stocked
Receive packages and coordinate pick-up with staff
Educate visitors about textile traditions featured in the Artisans Gallery
Process sales in the Artisans Gallery, including phone and in-person orders
Complete opening and closing procedures for the Artisans Gallery
Provide event support to the Education Department, including event setup,
assistance with tour groups and video captioning
Provide day-of staffing and support for family days, receptions and other events
Provide in-gallery interpretation to visitors
Additional support and special projects as needed
Work hours: 10-15 hours/week, during Standard Business Hours (M-F 8am-5pm),Weekends
(Sat 9am-5pm)

Standard Position Description

The student will be the first point of contact for visitors and customer service inquiries to the department. Tasks may include: greeting visitors, responding to in person, phone, email inquiries, provide customer service to other students, faculty, and staff; direct inquiries to the appropriate resources as needed; and assist with other office tasks. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific office needs.
