How much do custom picture framing jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 11, 2026, the average hourly pay for custom picture framing in the United States is $18.71, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.35 and $20.43 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How much can a picture framer earn?

A picture framer's earnings typically range from $20,000 to $40,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and whether they work independently or for a shop. Skilled framers with certifications or specialized tools may earn higher wages, and some may work part-time or on a freelance basis.

What are the main challenges faced in custom picture framing, and how can new employees best prepare for them?

One of the main challenges in custom picture framing is balancing creativity with precision, as each piece requires careful measurement and attention to detail to ensure a high-quality result. New employees should be prepared to work with a variety of materials and tools, and develop strong communication skills to interpret customer preferences effectively. Collaboration with team members, such as designers and sales staff, is often necessary to meet client expectations and deliver projects on time. Staying organized and learning best practices in handling artwork and framing equipment will help new hires succeed in this role.

What is custom picture framing?

Custom picture framing is the process of designing and creating a unique frame specifically tailored to fit and enhance a particular artwork, photograph, or object. Unlike ready-made frames, custom framing offers a wide selection of materials, colors, and styles to match the piece and the decor of where it will be displayed. Professional framers also use archival materials to help preserve and protect the item over time. This service is ideal for valuable, unusual-sized, or sentimental items that require special care and presentation.

Can I make money making picture frames?

A job in custom picture framing can be a source of income, especially if you work for a framing shop or start your own business. Success depends on skills, customer demand, pricing, and the ability to manage costs and time effectively.

What is the difference between Custom Picture Framing vs Picture Framing Installer?

AspectCustom Picture FramingPicture Framing Installer
CredentialsTypically requires knowledge of art, framing techniques, and sometimes certifications in framing or art handlingFocuses on installation skills, often with minimal formal credentials
Work EnvironmentArt shops, framing studios, galleries, or retail storesOn-site installation at clients' locations, including homes and galleries
Industry UsageUsed in art, photography, and retail framing businessesPrimarily in construction, retail, or art display setup industries

Custom Picture Framing involves creating tailored frames for artwork, requiring artistic knowledge and craftsmanship. In contrast, a Picture Framing Installer specializes in installing pre-made or custom frames at various locations. While both roles involve framing, the former emphasizes design and craftsmanship, and the latter focuses on installation skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Custom Picture Framing Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Custom Picture Framing Specialist, you need strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and a good sense of design, typically supported by experience in art, woodworking, or a related field. Familiarity with mat cutters, framing tools, measuring equipment, and point-of-sale systems is essential, and certification from organizations like the Professional Picture Framers Association can be beneficial. Excellent customer service, creative problem-solving, and clear communication help build client trust and deliver personalized results. These skills ensure high-quality craftsmanship, customer satisfaction, and efficient, safe project completion in a detail-oriented environment.

How much should I expect to pay for custom framing?

Custom picture framing costs typically range from $50 to $200 or more, depending on the size, materials, and complexity of the frame. Framing professionals often charge per linear foot or by the project, and higher-end materials or intricate designs increase the price. It is common to get a quote based on the specific artwork and framing options chosen.

How to become a custom picture framer?

To become a custom picture framer, gain experience in art, design, or woodworking, and develop skills in measuring, cutting, and assembling frames. Many professionals learn through apprenticeships or on-the-job training at framing shops, and some pursue certifications in framing or related fields to enhance their skills and credibility.
