Located on GW's campus in downtown D.C., The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum celebrates art, history and world cultures. Public programs and exhibitions are inspired by diverse collections of global textiles and local history. Resources for students and scholars include the peer-reviewed The Textile Museum Journal, the Cotsen Textile Traces Study Center and the Albert H. Small Center for National Capital Area Studies.
Position Specific Summary
The Student Collections Research Assistant will contribute to the documenting and disseminating of knowledge about The Textile Museum Collection through primary and secondary research. Using resources provided by the Arthur D. Jenkins Library and the Gelman Library, they will assist the curatorial staff with updating object records on MuseumPlus (the museum's collections management database). Additionally, they will support the museum's ongoing efforts to digitize and share its collections with the general public by authoring online descriptions for collection objects.
  • Conduct research on textiles in the museum's collection using secondary sources (ex. existing catalogue entries, exhibition labels, social media postings, etc.), and, when relevant, primary sources (ex. archival material). Identify any discrepancies between research findings and current object records in MuseumPlus. With approval from the Curators, clean and/or update each record with new information.
  • Compile bibliographies about collection objects and upload them to MuseumPlus. Identify publications, blog posts, and social media postings related to the collection that are not already listed in the database.
  • Clean up database records for objects with new photography and prepare these records for publication to the Collections Online website.
  • Author descriptions for a predetermined number of objects (approx. 100 words per object). With approval from the Curators, transfer the descriptions, as well as any outside reference material, into MuseumPlus. The descriptions will appear on the Collections Online website.
Standard Position Description

The student will perform administrative and research tasks with some discretion under direction of faculty member or research coordinator. Tasks may include: assisting with experiments, coding, data entry, data cleaning, and data analysis, preparing research and drafts for articles, reports, and/or presentations. Students may also complete literature reviews, draft summaries, and create graphs and figures. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental/faculty needs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • First-year MA or PhD program in Art History, Museum Studies, and/or Anthropology who can commit to 2 years pending renewal every semester
  • Familiarity with textile terminology and/or the history of cultures from Asia, Africa, the Americas
