Field Engineer - Marine Construction
Federal Way, WA. (On-site)

Orion is a leading specialty construction company providing innovative solutions for marine, heavy civil, and infrastructure projects throughout the United States. Orion's construction teams specialize in self-perform construction, including ports and marine terminals, bridges, piers and wharves, pile driving and deep foundations, marine concrete, dredging support, waterfront structures, and other complex heavy civil infrastructure projects.
Orion has an immediate opening for a Field Engineer based in Federal Way, Washington. This is an on-site, field-based position supporting Orion's self-perform marine and heavy civil construction operations throughout the Pacific Northwest. Travel to active construction projects throughout the Pacific Northwest is required based on project assignments and business needs.
This position is an entry level position accountable for providing field engineering project support to Orion. This includes inspection of project materials to be used and providing work control guidelines required for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials by craft workers. The incumbent will typically work closely with the Project Manager, Project Superintendent, Project Engineer, Safety Representative, and other skilled or semi-skilled craft persons on the jobsite to ensure successful project completion and close out.
The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of Orion which are centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, most importantly with each built upon the all-important foundation of Integrity.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works with the Project Management Team and jobsite work crews to ensure the successful completion of on-going or new projects.
  • Assists in the development of bid proposals for upcoming marine construction and services projects when assigned to the office.
  • Estimates costs to be incurred in upcoming projects accounting for materials, services, labor, and other associated costs.
  • Performs drafting, charting, and similar graphical work.
  • Works with Project Manager to ensure procurement of materials from suppliers that are required at the jobsite to complete the project.
  • Inventories, checks, examines, and measures materials received to ensure quality and quantity.
  • Interprets project plans and specifications.
  • Provides work control lines and elevations that are required for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials by crafts, i.e. forms for concrete pours, anchor bolts, piping hangers and supports, etc.
  • Checks as-built conditions that require the use of surveying techniques.
  • Provides topographic and cross-section surveys as required by planning and payment quantities and provides quantity calculations as required.
  • Coordinates surveying activities with the assigned engineer to meet the construction requirements.
  • Works directly with Project Managers, Project Engineers, Superintendents, Foremen, and craft professionals supporting Orion's self-perform marine and heavy civil construction operations.
  • Travels to active construction projects throughout the Pacific Northwest as required. Travel and the ability to work out-of-town for extended periods of time are required for this position.
  • Ensures that project team members and work crews work in a safe manner and are knowledgeable of safe work practices and policies.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering/Construction Science, Construction Management, or related discipline or equivalent work experience is required.
Prior hands-on work experience in the marine construction or heavy civil construction industry as a Summer Intern or Co-op Engineer is preferred but not required.
Experience or internship exposure involving marine construction, heavy civil infrastructure, ports, marine terminals, bridges, piers, wharves, pile driving, deep foundations, marine concrete, dredging, waterfront structures, or similar self-perform construction projects is preferred.
The incumbent must have a working knowledge of Project Management & Administration, Marine Construction, Heavy Civil Construction, Materials Procurement, Estimating, Scheduling, Project Tracking Software, Cost Control, Engineering & Project Standards, and Safety & Environmental Compliance.
This position is based in Federal Way, Washington and is an on-site position.
Remote work is not available. Travel throughout the Pacific Northwest is required. The incumbent must be willing and able to travel to active construction projects and work out-of-town for extended periods of time based on project assignments and business needs.
The incumbent must have the ability to quickly learn the technical aspects of the business; be an effective communicator; and to interface well with employees at all levels of the organization.
The Company expects and requires incumbent and each of its other employees to observe and fulfill the above and all other safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
This individual must also have the ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management including corporate.
The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.
In addition, Field Engineers must be capable of:
  • Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another and normally involves physically getting onto and off of work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Climbing vertical ladders to heights of 40'-50'.
  • Working in confined spaces and working at elevated heights.
  • Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs. as required.
  • Adapting to extreme temperature changes and outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure.
  • Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident.

Compensation & Benefits:
Salary Range: $75,000 - $95,000 per year, depending on experience.
