Job description

Java Engineer I/II - Full Stack

Apply now Job no: 504988
Work type: Full Time Regular
Location: Remote
Categories: Information Technology

Join Mutual of Omaha's Workplace Solutions team and help keep claims technology running smoothly for hundreds of thousands of members. In this role, you'll work with an engineering team maintaining and enhancing full-stack Java applications that process and distribute critical business data - the kind of work where reliability and thoughtful problem-solving matter as much as new features. This opportunity is on a collaborative, agile team that values curiosity and fast learners over a checklist of tools. If you're strong in Java, enjoy digging into how existing systems work, and are eager to grow, we want to talk to you.

You'll work primarily on the backend (Java/Spring), with regular exposure to the frontend (React), contributing across the full software life cycle from design through delivery and optimization. The team works in a SAFe/ART delivery model and runs three-week sprints rolling up into quarterly PI planning and is fully remote today with no relocation requirement.

What We Can Offer You

  • Estimated Salary:
  • Engineer I - $110,000 - $116,500 plus annual bonus opportunity
  • Engineer II - $125,000 - $135,000 plus annual bonus opportunity
  • 401(k) plan with a 2% company contribution and 6% company match
  • Work-life balance with vacation, personal time and paid holidays. See our benefits and perks page for details
  • Applicants for this position must not now, nor at any point in the future, require sponsorship for employment

This role is classified as remote; however, periodic in-person attendance will be required at times for activities such as quarterly or project planning, training, or other business-critical meetings.

What You'll Do

  • Java and Spring Boot are the core of this role - this is a backend-first position with regular but secondary frontend work.
  • Maintain and enhance existing full-stack Java applications that support core business operations
  • Investigate and resolve operational and data-processing issues reported by business groups, providing production support and troubleshooting as needed
  • Participate in scheduled deployments and release activities
  • Apply software engineering and test automation practices across the full software life cycle - from enhancement and testing through maintenance and optimization
  • Develop automated test solutions to ensure high-quality code delivery; implement test automation processes and follow through on results
  • Contribute improvements to standards-based interfaces for web-based applications and to internal development standards
  • Maintain a customer-focused, product mindset - understanding how the applications you support impact real end users and business groups
  • Collaborate closely with business and technology partners throughout the project lifecycle
  • Participate in agile ceremonies, including three-week sprints and quarterly PI planning
  • Complete a live technical coding exercise as part of the interview process - a straightforward exercise designed to confirm fundamentals and learning ability

What You'll Bring

  • Professionally solved challenges for full-stack application development and implementation over the last three or more years with:
  • Java, Spring / Spring Boot, advanced experience in a JavaScript framework, SQL, Rest APIs, microservices
  • Experience with React or comparable modern frontend framework
  • Develops unit tests (JUnit/Spock) and uses version control
  • Collaborative attitude and a willingness to work with team members
  • Learning agility - learns quickly when facing new problems, is a versatile learner open to change and driven to pick up new tech through research and investigation
  • Self-motivated, driven, and interested in innovating within an established stack
  • Comfortable working in an agile team and collaborating closely with technical and non-technical partners

Preferred

  • AWS experience -the team's stack trends toward AWS
  • Kafka or other event-driven / messaging experience
  • MuleSoft
  • Exposure to automated testing frameworks, Docker, Jenkins, Kubernetes, CI/CD

Why You'll Love It Here

This team gives engineers real ownership and a fast path to learning new tools and problem domains. We're looking for someone who's curious and picks things up quickly, not someone who already checks every box. Many of our engineers came into software development through non-traditional paths, and we value real-world problem-solving experience as much as a specific pedigree. You'll be paired with an experienced developer from day one, backed by established onboarding documentation, and you'll work alongside senior engineers genuinely invested in mentoring in a remote-first environment that trusts you to do great work from wherever you are.

Beyond this role, Workplace Solutions is a growing part of the business, and engineers here have real paths to learn new technologies, take on new problem domains, and move into different areas of the organization over time.

If you're ready to grow your Java and full-stack skills on a team that values agility, collaboration, and getting better every sprint, we'd love to hear from you.

We value diverse experience, skills, and passion for innovation. If your experience aligns with the listed requirements, please apply!

If you have questions about your application or the hiring process, email our Talent Acquisition area at careers@mutualofomaha.com.
