If you want to learn how to repair and recondition vehicles to the highest standards, CarMax is the place to be. You will use your skills to get vehicles ready for our customers, ensuring they are safe and reliable. The Automotive Apprentice will learn to repair engines, adjust steering and suspension, fix heating and air conditioning and more. The Mechanical Associate I will be responsible for performing general vehicle inspections and entry level repairs for the mechanical reconditioning process per CarMax Quality Standards. These duties include, but are not limited to, inspection of tires, brakes, batteries, and fluids, oil changes, replacement of air filters, and identification of frame, rust and flood damage.

Must be able to perform multiple duties in a fast paced environment, provide outstanding customer service, and follow workplace cleanliness and organization standards.

Role Responsibilities

  • Inspect vehicles to ensure customers drive away with confidence
  • Collaborate with a skilled team to resolve technical issues quickly and effectively
  • Gain hands-on experience with a wide range of domestic and foreign vehicles
  • Utilize advanced tools and technology to deliver automotive service
  • Follow CarMax’s standard guidelines for reconditioning and repair
  • Contribute to a positive, customer-focused environment through teamwork and precision
  • Follow CarMax Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) requirements and maintain a clean and orderly work area.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience in one or more areas: vehicle maintenance, vehicle inspections, brake repairs, and tire repairs.
  • Strong knowledge of safety compliance and ability to uphold workplace standards
  • Physical capability to lift heavy objects and remain on your feet for extended periods
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
  • Valid driver’s license required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Where required by State/Local law, maintain ASE Certifications in Steering and Suspension (A4), Brakes (A5), Heating Air Conditioning (A7), Electrical (A6), Engine Repair (A1), Manual Drive Train and Axles (A3), Engine Performance (A8), and Automatic Transmission/Transaxle (A2)
