Job description

MRC Global serves the oil and gas industry across the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors as well as the chemical and gas distribution market sectors worldwide.
Job Purpose
The Welding Machine Shop Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day running of the welding and machine shop, employees and equipment, expediting jobs, quality control, shop safety, housekeeping, and machine maintenance. This role is also responsible for communicating with other departments within MRC Global to ensure the flow of materials and the completion of projects.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
The Role's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Plan daily work and assign employees as needed to complete each job.
  • Manage the team, work processes, and equipment in the shop to ensure the timely completion of jobs.
  • Responsible for the inspection and quality control of all finished goods.
  • Solves problems and works through challenges on a project-to-project basis.
  • Inspect raw material for defects and reject unusable material. Ensure high-quality control standards on all jobs leaving the shop.
  • Hire, train, and supervise all employees.
  • Conduct performance reviews and improvement plans as required.
  • Hold weekly meetings on productivity, safety, and housekeeping.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient shop and work area.
  • Communicate with Sales, Warehouse, and other departments to ensure smooth progression of completed work.
  • Order supplies, tools, schedule service, and other needs to keep the shop and equipment maintained and running.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Required Experience
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience that provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in welding and machining.
  • Previous shop supervisor, manufacturing, and general labor experience is required.
  • Must have a current, valid driver's license and acceptable record at all times.

Preferred Experience
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) language skills preferred.

Skills & Abilities
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written are a must for this role.
  • Strong PC skills with knowledge of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, and the ability to learn MRC Global-specific software.
  • Must be familiar with equipment (welding), power tools & able to operate safely.
  • Must be familiar with material handling vehicles (forklift).
  • Able to read a tape measure, calipers, and blueprints.

Working Conditions
  • Physical activity/exertion is routine.
  • Able to lift 25-50 pounds over head.
  • May be exposed to loud noises.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Operate heavy machinery/tools (as required).
  • PPE required.
  • Able to work overtime and weekends.
  • Able to work in the elements, such as in extreme temperatures (hot/cold).
