Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:
Big Brothers Big Sisters at the Y seeks an entry level professional to join our team.
This position will focus on supporting the academic and personal development of
students in schools. The Success Mentor is responsible for managing a caseload of
students, building meaningful relationships, and collaborating with school staff.
Responsibilities also include monitoring student attendance, providing regular
guidance, and implementing strategies to enhance student engagement and
success. Requirements of the role are strong communication, empathy, and
organizational skills, with a focus on positively impacting students' educational
experiences. The Success Mentor is required to function with a high degree of
independent judgment in accordance with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America
(BBBSA) national standards and the standards of the Y in Central Maryland.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Ensure high-level proficiency in applying child safety and risk management
knowledge, policies and procedures throughout all aspects of job function.
Conduct parent/child enrollments at the child’s home or school and provide
child safety education and program orientation; assess and refer families for
alternative or additional services as needed.
Meet established monthly and annual goals for students by accurately
documenting and reporting interaction with students, progress, and
attendance changes.
Maintain accurate paperwork and data entry into the agency web-based
(Matchforce) system for each student according to agency standards
including completion of necessary surveys.

Provide timely and comprehensive reports and recommendations for students
in the program based upon consistent contact with students, enrollment
information, and assessment.
Nurture and sustain the mentoring experience by building relationships and
developing trust with students and families.
Effectively coach and motivate students by applying effective mentoring
techniques to improve student attendance and engagement.
Partner with teachers, counselors, administrators, and community
organizations to provide support and guidance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Prior mentoring or teaching experience is preferred.

Experience

  • At least two (2) years of work experience in the field of human services or a related field.

  • Demonstrated work experience working with both child and adult populations

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and the Google Platform

Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 

  • Demonstrated ability to: understand and be patient with students’ challenges, relate well in multicultural environments, maintain confidentiality throughout daily operations, effectively collaborate with colleagues and school staff, use time effectively, and focus on details.

  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve by collecting meaningful data, identifying issues, drawing solid conclusions, and implementing solutions.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple task

  • Proficiency in computer skills including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
