Job / Task Description
As an Inspector โ€“ Civil & Transportation (Field Coordinator II), you will provide CE&I services for roadway, sidewalk, and airfield construction projects, beginning with Birminghamโ€™s citywide resurfacing program and expanding to airport runway construction projects. You will be responsible for documenting and inspecting contractor activities to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and safety requirements.

This is a field-based role that requires attention to detail, strong communication, and accurate recordkeeping. The Inspector will report directly to the Senior Inspector and/or Project Manager.

Key Responsibilities
Construction Inspection & Documentation
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Observe, inspect, and document contractor operations for compliance with project plans, specifications, and safety standards.
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Complete accurate daily reports, including contractor labor, equipment, materials, work performed, and any pertinent field conversations.
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Verify and record material testing results and certifications.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Assist with measurement and calculation of quantities, plotting cross-sections, and computing earthwork quantities.
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Monitor erosion control, traffic control, and work zone safety practices.
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Support compliance with ALDOT, FAA, FHWA, and municipal standards.
Coordination & Communication
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Serve as a field liaison with contractors, city staff, and agency representatives as directed.
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Provide timely updates to the Senior Inspector and the Project Manager on project progress, issues, or concerns.
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Maintain professional interactions with clients, contractors, and the public.
Field & Office Support
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Assist with office tasks related to project documentation and reporting.
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Support preparation of final project records and close-out documentation.
Required Qualifications
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Two to five years of experience in construction inspection, surveying, or highway/aviation materials testing and inspection.
ยทย  ย  ย  ย OR a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with at least one year of related inspection or testing experience.
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Valid driver's license
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Reliable personal transportation to travel to job sites
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Available for overnight travel as required
ยทย  ย  ย  ย One or more of the following current certifications (as required per assignment):
o ย  Certified Asphalt Technician Level I โ€“ Field Tester
o ย  Certified Concrete Technician (ACI and ALDOT Certification)
o ย  Certified Asphalt Roadway Technician
o ย  Work Zone Safety Certification
o ย  Radiological Safety Course Certification
o ย  Qualified Credentialed Inspector (QCI)
Other Standard Requirements
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and standard office software.
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Strong verbal and written communication skills.
ยทย  ย  ย  ย Ability to sit, stand, walk significant distances, and lift to 60 lbs unassisted.

Preferred Qualifications
