Job description

War on the Rocks is the premier platform for analysis, commentary, and conversation on strategy, defense, and foreign affairs. Our free and members only podcasts are central to how we reach a global audience of decision-makers, military professionals, and engaged citizens. We are seeking a skilled Podcast Engineer to join our team and ensure the highest production standards across our expanding portfolio of shows.

Please note, this role is only open to people who currently have a right to work in the United States and are able to work in the Washington, DC area (we are in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and WFH on Mondays and Fridays). About the Role

The Podcast Engineer will be responsible for the technical execution of War on the Rocks podcasts from recording through publication. This role requires deep audio engineering expertise, creative problem-solving, and the ability to work closely with hosts, editors, and guests to deliver polished, compelling episodes on deadline. The engineer will play a central role in shaping the sound of one of the most trusted brands in national security media.

Responsibilities
  • Edit and mix podcast episodes for clarity, consistency, and pacing, ensuring professional broadcast-quality sound.
  • Apply audio processing (EQ, compression, noise reduction, leveling) to optimize recordings.
  • Integrate intros, outros, sponsor messages, and music into final episodes.
  • Deliver mastered audio files that meet publishing deadlines and technical standards.
  • Maintain and refine workflows to improve consistency, efficiency, and scalability across multiple shows.
  • Listen critically to recordings and edits to ensure episodes flow smoothly in substance and tone — not just technically — so that conversations sound natural, engaging, and coherent.
  • Advise hosts and guests on best practices for microphones, recording environments, and remote setups.
  • Ensure compliance with licensing and intellectual property requirements for music and audio assets.
  • Stay current with audio production tools, techniques, and industry trends.
Why Join Us

At War on the Rocks, you’ll help bring sharp, timely conversations on strategy and statecraft to a global audience. You’ll be part of a small, creative team with outsized impact, where excellence and innovation are valued — and where your work will reach influential listeners.
