How much do entry level online proofreading jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 27, 2026, the average yearly pay for entry level online proofreading in the United States is $49,574.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $44,000.00 and $54,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Are there legit proofreading jobs?

Entry level online proofreading jobs are legitimate opportunities that often require strong language skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with editing tools. Many companies and freelance platforms offer remote proofreading positions, but job seekers should verify the employer's credibility and avoid scams by researching reviews and avoiding upfront payments.

How do I get hired as a proofreader?

To get hired as an entry-level online proofreader, you should develop strong language and grammar skills, often demonstrated through a relevant certification or training. Building a portfolio of sample work and applying to freelance platforms or companies that hire remote proofreaders can increase your chances of employment.

Are proofreaders still in demand?

Proofreaders, including entry-level online proofreaders, are still in demand as companies and publishers seek accurate and polished content. The role often requires strong language skills and attention to detail, with opportunities available in freelance, remote, and digital publishing environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Online Proofreader, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Online Proofreader, you need excellent grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills, often supported by a strong command of the English language and attention to detail. Familiarity with proofreading tools like Grammarly, Microsoft Word's Track Changes, and style guides such as APA or Chicago Manual of Style is advantageous. Strong time management, focus, and effective written communication help you meet deadlines and work independently. These skills ensure error-free content, uphold publishing standards, and contribute to client satisfaction in a remote environment.

Is AI replacing proofreaders?

AI tools are increasingly used to assist proofreaders by catching common errors and suggesting corrections, but they do not fully replace the need for human proofreaders. Entry level online proofreaders still rely on their language skills and judgment to ensure accuracy, especially for context, tone, and nuanced editing. AI serves as a helpful supplement rather than a complete substitute in proofreading roles.

What are some common challenges entry level online proofreaders face, and how can they overcome them?

Entry level online proofreaders often encounter challenges such as maintaining attention to detail during long or repetitive assignments and adapting to various style guides required by different clients or industries. Additionally, remote work can make it difficult to communicate effectively with editors and writers, which may affect clarity of expectations. To overcome these obstacles, it’s helpful to take regular breaks, use checklists for style guide requirements, and proactively seek feedback from team members. Participating in online forums or training sessions can also help build confidence and skills.
