BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P 2Z VP ENERGY DELIVERY Department of the P VP ENERGY DELIVERY Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

JOB FUNCTION:

Supports tri-company Energy Delivery with critically evaluating information gathered from multiple sources, reconciles conflicts, decomposes high-level information into details, abstracts up from low-level information to a general understanding, and distinguishes user requests from the underlying true needs.  Investigates business systems, identifies options for improving business systems and bridges the needs of the business with the use of technology as applicable.  Works as a liaison among stakeholders in order to elicit, analyze, communicate and validate requirements for changes to processes, policies and systems; in order to re-engineer processes used to increase productivity and capability. Completes analysis to understand business problems and opportunities in the context of the requirements and works with the business to recommend solutions that enable the organization to achieve its goals.  Assist in the development, preparation, submission, presentation and execution of rate cases, significant investigations, and other regulatory matters before the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission ("PUC" or "Commission").  Reviews and prepares written testimonies, exhibits, work papers and responses to regulatory and investigative concerns. Serves on company incident command/emergency response team as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Contributes to the development and implementation of initiatives to improve and report on Energy Delivery policies, procedures, and practices related to productivity, cost effectiveness, and efficiency through preparing and reporting on cross-functional benchmarking, metrics, and key performance indicators.  Lead and support annual benchmarking continuous improvement efforts, working closely with management teams overseeing strategic initiatives to track and report cost savings efforts.  Analyze data and trends, and support efforts to incorporate use of data in performance measurement, management audits, continuous improvement.
  • Develops and prepares monthly financial reporting for Energy Delivery.  Provides monthly reports, UI Planner updates, monitor, and analyze financial performance, work with key stakeholders to identify root causes for discrepancies, support the implementation and reporting of cost containment and efficiency measures, and other financial analysis as required.  Ensures compliance with all Corporate, federal financial and regulatory requirements. 
  • Assist with re-engineering and/or streamlining of business processes and the development of the needed justification for change (people, process, technology, and culture).
  • Coordinates and provides substantive contribution to the development, preparation and review of work papers supporting financial budgets and forecasts for Operations , including applications for capital projects requiring regulatory approval, determination of staffing requirements, outside services, materials, tools, materials inventory, and other areas, as required.
  • Provides substantive support and direction in the development, preparation, submission, presentation and execution of submissions for significant investigations and other regulatory matters before the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission ("PUC" or "Commission"), including testimony, exhibits, work papers, and information request responses.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of accounting, finance and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Thorough knowledge of developing operational budgets and forecasts.
  • Thorough knowledge of preparing audit work papers and exhibits.
  • Working knowledge of financial information systems and forecasting software applications.
  • Working knowledge of engineering concepts, energy delivery operations, economics, planning, regulatory law, and/or statistics, (several areas preferred).
  • Working knowledge of personal computers, enterprise resource planning systems, and mainframe systems.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge level of Microsoft Office applications (i.e., MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Visio, etc.).
  • Familiarity or ability to learn the PUC regulatory process in Hawaii.
  • Familiarity or ability to learn utility accounting, finance, and rate-making principles.
  • Familiarity with applicable state and federal financial regulations and laws.
  • Ability to learn company specific software applications and databases.

Skills Requirements

  • Demonstrate strong analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to take complex technical or engineering concepts, statistical data and industry specific information  and write comprehensive documents that are easy to read and comprehensible by all audiences (public, regulators, legislators or other interested parties).
  • Demonstrate excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.  Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with all levels of Company personnel, regulatory commission staff and Consumer Advocate staff, is required.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities and assignments.

Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, engineering, economics, business statistics or any combination of one or more of the following:
    • CPA with accounting experience (4-6 years+)
    • Multiple years (5-7 years+) of operational experience
    • Regulatory experience (3-5 years), preferably in matters before the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, or an equivalent agency, with ratemaking jurisdiction for electric utilities
  • Technical writing experience, highly desirable.
  • Six Sigma or lean principles experience highly desirable.
