Entry Level Lab Technician

This position is based in a plant laboratory environment on a 1st shift schedule, typically 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Actalent is seeking a lab technician to support a paint manufacturing company. You will work closely with other technicians and the customer service coordinator to blend product and related materials according to precise formulas that meet customer requirements. Accurate weighing and organized record-keeping are crucial. Adherence to all safety procedures and the use of personal protective equipment is mandatory. Self-management skills are essential for success in this role.

This role supports the refinish color matching team by preparing, mixing, and spraying color samples for evaluation and formulation in a fast-paced laboratory environment. The Lab Technician accurately prepares paint mixtures, applies samples according to specifications, and maintains a clean and organized lab to ensure consistent, high-quality results.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare color samples for evaluation and formulation to support the refinish color matching team.
  • Mix wet paint according to detailed formulations and recipes provided by the color matcher.
  • Acquire color formulations and prepare sample mixtures based on the specified paint formulations.
  • Ensure accurate dispensing, measurement, and labeling of all color lab paint samples.
  • Acquire wet paint samples from mixing stations and spray samples according to predefined specifications.
  • Operate and adjust spraying equipment to achieve consistent, repeatable sample finishes.
  • Perform general preparation and cleanup of laboratory areas to maintain a safe and organized workspace.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment in clean, functional condition and report any issues promptly.
  • Follow all laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and quality standards while handling paints, pigments, and chemicals.
  • Work efficiently to balance both mixing and spraying functions in order to meet production demands and timelines.

Essential Skills

  • Experience working in a laboratory, production, or similar hands-on environment, preferably involving wet chemistry, paint, or pigments.
  • Familiarity with basic lab practices such as measuring, mixing, and handling chemicals or wet materials.
  • Ability to follow detailed formulations, recipes, and written instructions with a high level of accuracy.
  • Strong attention to detail in dispensing, labeling, and documenting paint samples.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, on-your-feet environment that requires consistent productivity.
  • Ability to maintain clean and organized work areas and equipment.
  • Eligibility to work under export control requirements in the United States.
  • Strong commitment to safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment and respirators.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's (BS) or Associate's (AS) degree in chemistry, biology, or a related field is preferred.
  • BG or coursework in chemistry, biology, or wet chemistry is highly beneficial.
  • Stable work history with demonstrated good tenure in previous roles, especially in fast-paced environments.
  • Prior experience working with paint, pigments, coatings, or similar materials is an advantage.
  • Ability to adapt to changing production demands and collaborate effectively with the color matching team.

Work Environment

This position is based in a plant laboratory environment on a first-shift schedule, typically 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The role involves working on your feet in a fast-paced setting, handling paints, pigments, and wet chemistry materials, and frequently transitioning between mixing and spraying areas. Personal protective equipment is required; safety shoes are needed, and all other PPE is provided. The technician will be fitted for a respirator, and facial hair must allow for proper respirator fit on the first day. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and adherence to established procedures while supporting consistent production and high-quality color matching.
