Job description

Department: Core Laboratory
Shift/schedule: Part Time (24 hrs/wk)
GENERAL SUMMARY
Works under the supervision of the Core Laboratory Manager. The Laboratory Technical Assistant's primary job function is to process specimens. Performs non-complex diagnostic testing under the supervision of a MLT or MT. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• GED/High School Diploma required.
• Basic chemistry and biology courses are preferred
Licensure:
• BMVL Required (Must maintain eligibility to drive as determined by SOMC insurance carriers).
Experience:
• Three months of laboratory experience required.
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
1. Orders and processes specimens for various laboratory tests. Prepares for send outs as required.
2. Performs non-complex testing on automated instruments under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist as required.
3. Performs and documents Quality Control and daily instrument maintenance.
4. Centrifuges specimens. Checks pendings and aliquots specimens for testing. Prepares and labels simple solutions for use in diagnostic testing. Prepares specimens for transport to laboratories.
5. Keeps work area neat and clean. Follows all safety policies and procedures. Takes inventory, stocks and orders supplies for area.
6. Participates in training and orientation of new staff and students.
7. Assists managers/supervisors with clerical and technical support duties as assigned.
