Patient Registration Specialist, Admitting and Registration

Position Summary:
The Registration Associate is an entry level position focused on learning and performing accurate collection and data entry of the required financial and demographic information for all patients. Such information shall be inclusive of, but not limited to, pre-certifications, authorizations, insurance and employer plan terms, patient types, payers, and regulatory guidelines related to compliance. Incumbent demonstrates knowledge of all payer categories, i.e. Commercial, Managed Care, Self-Pay, Blue Cross, Workers Comp, Tenncare and Medicare. Incumbent is accountable for assuring all records are located and processed on a daily basis. Incumbent acts as a liaison between patients and/or family members and other medical personnel. Incumbent must have excellent customer service skills in order to assure the needs of our community and customers are met.
Responsibilities
  • Registers and admits patients in a professional manner, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and efficiency
  • Determines correct patient type based upon patient need and physician order
  • Documents account notes using financial system
  • Educates patients and family members on consent for treatment, advance directives, medical release, patient rights, PCP and MCO requirements, non coverage, billing and payment policies
  • Generates and distributes computer census on a daily basis
  • Collects co-payments and deposits to promote positive cash flow
  • Receives payments for hospital accounts, issues receipt, reconciles all payment transactions at shift end and verifies petty cash
  • Verifies Tenncare and Worker's Comp eligibility
  • Completes pre-registration of all patient types
  • Performs change patient type on all laboratory specimens
  • Sets up payment arrangements on private pay patients with the inability to pay, or refers to the Business Office
  • Collects, secures, and returns all patient valuables
  • Reviews all physician orders to assure diagnosis and physician signatures are present
  • Compiles and distributes admission packets to all patients admitted for overnight stay
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Registration Supervisor and Business Office Manager

Qualifications
Minimum Education:
None specified; will accept any combination of formal education and/or prior work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and ability needed to perform the essential tasks of the job, typically such as would be equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. Preference may be given to individuals possessing a HS diploma or GED.
