This position provides an opportunity for individuals with a technical background to apply their Computer Science education in a practice that combines science, technology, and intellectual property law. The Patent Scientist will work with attorneys, inventors, and clients to evaluate innovative technologies, identify patentable concepts, and support the procurement of patent protection for new inventions. Candidates will also assist in evaluating competitor technologies and products.

This role is well suited for recent graduates, early-career professionals, or individuals with patent prosecution experience who are interested in gaining exposure to a wide range of emerging technologies and will develop skills in identifying inventive concepts, describing new technologies, and working with the United States Patent and Trademark Office during the patent prosecution process. The ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, concise, and effective manner is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and product developments to identify potentially patentable innovations.
  • Collaborate with inventors and technical teams to understand underlying concepts and inventive features.
  • Prepare technical illustrations, figures, and supporting materials for patent applications.
  • Draft patent applications, including detailed specifications and claims, with a focus on technical accuracy and clarity.
  • Review prior art and cited references, develop response strategies, and assist with patent prosecution activities.
  • Participate in discussions with patent examiners and support efforts to advance applications toward allowance.
  • Analyze competitor technologies and intellectual property landscapes to support strategic decision making.
  • Assist attorneys and clients in developing and managing patent portfolios.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science required.
  • Advanced degree and/or relevant industry experience preferred.
  • Coursework or practical experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, semiconductor technologies, software systems, or related technical fields is preferred.
  • Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Two or more years of patent preparation and prosecution experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience as a USPTO Patent Examiner is a plus.
  • Registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office is preferred. Candidates who are not currently registered must have the interest and eligibility necessary to obtain registration
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Strong academic credentials, analytical abilities, and attention to detail.
  • Professional commitment and interpersonal skills necessary to succeed in a collaborative team environment.

Ideal Candidates Will Demonstrate

  • Strong research, analytical, and technical writing skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity and an interest in emerging technologies.
  • Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
  • Superior attention to detail.
  • A strong work ethic and commitment to client service.
