Job description

  1. Demonstrates a good technical knowledge of the surgical environment, principles of infection control and sterility and uses this knowledge in assisting the Registered Nurse and Surgeon to provide a safe surgical environment which supports quality patient care.   
  2. Prepares the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes and sterile solutions. 
  3. Maintains a sterile environment according to hospital policy and AORN Standards of Care. 
  4. Able to perform the scrub technician functions for all services and specialties. 
  5. Assembles sterile and non-sterile equipment and adjusts as necessary to ensure proper working condition. 
  6. During surgery passes instruments, and other sterile supplies to surgeon and surgeon’s assistants. 
  7. Holds retractors, cuts sutures, helps count sponges, needles, supplies and instruments.   
  8. Prepares, cares for, and disposes of specimens taken for laboratory analysis.   
  9. Assists in applying surgical dressings.  
  10. Ensures availability of surgeon and case specific instrumentation and equipment following department protocol and surgeon’s preference cards. 
  11. Assists in transporting patients to the Operating Room and helps position patients on the Operating Room table.   
  12. Understands and uses the appropriate sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments. 
  13. Understands the specific use and functioning of all supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures.  
  14. May operate sterilizers. Lights, suction, and help with diagnostic equipment. 
  15. Under the direction of the surgeon and Registered Nurse, accurately and safely prepares and labels medications during the “surgical procedure.” 
  16. Assists in transferring patients to the recovery area.  
  17. May assist in turnover and restocking the operating room for the next surgical procedure.   
  18. Respects patients’ inherent right to privacy, dignity and safety. 
  19.  Provides a safe environment for the surgical patient. 
  20. Assumes responsibility for orientation of new Operating Room employees, as required.  
  21. Understands the importance of teamwork, consideration and cooperation.  
  22. Works in conjunction with Registered Nurse to update and maintain equipment and instrumentation of specialty services. 
  23. Participates in unit staff meetings, in-service programs and educational programs relative to career development.   
  24. Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested by his/her immediate supervisor. 

Surgical Technologist – Grade: S13, Job Code: 7107 

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English 
  • Graduate of an Accredited Civilian or Military Operating Room Technologist/Surgical Technologist program 
  • (BLS) - Basic Life Support certification (obtain within 90 days, offered within) 
  • Must meet at least one of the following qualifications: 
  • Must obtain National Certification within 12 months of graduation and maintain certification 
  • Have been employed as a Surgical Technologist in a surgical facility on July 1, 2013 and become certified within one year of start date and maintain certification  
  • Have successfully completed a training program for Surgical Technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service which has been deemed appropriate by the commissioner and become certified within one year of start date and maintain certification 
  •  

Surgical Technologist (Certified) – Grade: S14, Job Code: 7109 

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English 
  • Graduate of an Accredited Civilian or Military Operating Room Technologist/Surgical Technologist program 
  • Certified by an entity accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and which is also recognized by both the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists and must maintain certification 
  • (BLS) - Basic Life Support certification (obtain within 90 days, offered within)
