Title
Graduate Assistant - English Programs
Position Description
The Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 9 for fall, 9 for spring and 6 for summer.
Overview and Duties:
We are requesting a Full GA for 2026-27 to support key initiatives for the English Graduate Program under the supervision of the Graduate English Chair, Dr. Gregory Chaplin.
This GA will have three different sets of duties:
- The GA will help plan, organize, and run the Seventh Annual Masters in English Regional Conference (MERC). We alternate hosting this regional conference with our partner, Salem State University, and in Spring 2027, we will be hosting it at BSU. Under faculty supervision, the Graduate Assistants-one from Salem and one from BSU-take the lead in organizing MERC, and so they will become familiar with all aspects of organizing an academic conference: they prepare the conference materials, set the deadlines, review the abstracts, organize the panels, etc.
- The GA will assist with the Program Review of the English Graduate Program, which is part of the English Department's 2026-27 Program Review. They will help prepare and administer surveys to current students and alumni, organize focus groups, assemble support materials, etc.
- The GA will have a number of tasks focused on improving program-wide communication and outreach. For example, they will help build and administer the new Graduate English Blackboard site, which is intended to help students navigate the program, and they will visit select undergraduate classes to recruit students for our 4+1 and MA programs.
Outcomes:
This GA will become familiar with all aspects of organizing an academic conference, which is a valuable addition to a CV or résumé. They will gain expertise with a range of academic and educational software (WordPress, Blackboard, Google Forms, PowerPoint, etc.), and they will develop various presentation skills, visiting undergraduate classes to disseminated information about our program and assisting with focus groups as part of our Program Review.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- This Graduate Assistant will need to learn and use a basic range of academic software-WordPress, Blackboard, Google Forms, PowerPoint, etc.
