What is an engineering project engineer?

Engineering Project Engineers are professionals who oversee and manage engineering projects from conception to completion. They coordinate teams, develop project plans, manage budgets and schedules, and ensure that technical specifications and quality standards are met. Project Engineers act as a bridge between technical teams, clients, and stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and problem-solving throughout the project lifecycle. Their work is crucial in a wide range of industries, including construction, manufacturing, energy, and technology.

How does an engineering project engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

Engineering Project Engineers regularly work with multidisciplinary teams, including design, manufacturing, quality assurance, and procurement. They facilitate communication between these groups to ensure project requirements are clearly understood and met. This often involves coordinating meetings, tracking progress, and resolving technical challenges collaboratively. Building strong relationships and effectively managing stakeholder expectations are crucial for ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering project engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Project Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management, and a relevant engineering degree or certification such as PMP. Familiarity with technical tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and project management software such as MS Project or Primavera is typical. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills help manage cross-functional teams and ensure project milestones are met. These skills and qualifications are crucial to deliver successful engineering projects on time, within scope, and budget.

  • Identify, apply for, and secure applicable local and state permits (e.g., site plan review, zoning, stormwater, SESC, building, and ROW permits).
  • Design equipment and pipe support foundations.
  • Communicate directly with authorities having jurisdiction, including attending and presenting at planning commission meetings.
  • Perform QA/QC checks on calculations and design deliverables, and review civil engineering design packages.
  • Coordinate closely with project team members across disciplines and maintain active client correspondence.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • Experience: 5–10 years of experience as a Civil Engineer.
  • Licensure: Active Michigan PE License is required.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of stormwater management strategies and best practices, alongside familiarity with local permitting processes. Structural steel and concrete foundation design skills are highly preferred.
  • Software Proficiency: Experience with Civil 3D, AutoCAD, OpenFlows Storm, OpenPlant, Microstation, RISA 3D, RISA Foundation, and Microsoft 365.
  • Soft Skills: Strong technical writing capabilities and comfortable presenting to public planning commissions.
Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or genetic information.
