What is an engineering lead?

Engineering Leads are experienced engineers who oversee technical teams within a company. They are responsible for guiding the team’s development processes, ensuring high-quality code, and aligning technical solutions with business goals. In addition to their technical expertise, Engineering Leads mentor team members, facilitate communication between stakeholders, and help prioritize project tasks. Their role often bridges the gap between engineering and management, making them crucial for successful project delivery.

How does an engineering lead balance hands-on technical work with team leadership responsibilities?

As an Engineering Lead, you'll often split your time between contributing to technical projects and overseeing your team's progress. While you'll still participate in code reviews, architectural decisions, and sometimes active development, a significant portion of your role involves mentoring team members, facilitating communication, and ensuring project milestones are met. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management skills and the ability to delegate effectively, so the team can thrive while you maintain technical oversight. This hybrid focus provides opportunities for both technical growth and leadership development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Lead, you need a solid background in software development, project management, and a relevant technical degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, agile project management tools (e.g., Jira), and cloud platforms is often required, along with certifications such as PMP or AWS Certified Solutions Architect. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you guide teams and foster collaboration. These abilities are crucial for ensuring project success, technical excellence, and a productive, motivated engineering team.

At Quanta Power Solutions, we are driven by a culture of safety, integrity, and disciplined execution - and we're building a team that shares that commitment.

About this Role

Quanta Power Solutions is seeking a driven and technically skilled Engineering Project Manager to support major power-generation projects based out of our Birmingham office. This role plays a critical part in delivering large-scale EPC initiatives across the power sector, including gas turbines, renewable energy, battery energy storage systems (BESS), substations, and transmission systems.

The Engineering Project Manager will lead the planning, design, and execution of critical infrastructure projects, ensuring engineering deliverables are technically sound, efficiently executed, and seamlessly integrated across all disciplines. This role provides technical leadership and engineering oversight throughout the full project lifecycle while partnering closely with operations, procurement, client teams, and project stakeholders.

What You'll Do

  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with company standards, client requirements, and quality expectations
  • Manage engineering resources, staffing plans, schedules, and overall project performance
  • Coordinate subcontractor and supplier scopes, pricing, schedules, and invoice approvals
  • Collaborate closely with field operations, procurement, customer account teams, and project stakeholders
  • Mentor, train, and develop engineering personnel while supporting team growth and performance
  • Support business development activities including client meetings, technical presentations, and proposal development
  • Drive innovation, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement initiatives across engineering processes
  • Promote and reinforce a strong culture of safety, quality, accountability, and integrity
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and engineering best practices to support innovative project solutions
  • Support construction execution and field coordination activities as needed
  • Perform additional duties to support project and organizational success
What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications

  • Strong technical expertise across process, structural, civil, mechanical, piping, and electrical engineering disciplines
  • Deep knowledge of engineering and construction standards, industry codes, and regulations including ANSI, ASTM, ACI, AISC, IEEE, NEC, and NESC
  • Strong understanding of engineering workflows, multidisciplinary coordination, and full EPC project execution lifecycle
  • Experience with scheduling, contracts, procurement coordination, risk mitigation, and project execution strategies
  • Knowledge of project controls, estimating, forecasting, and cost/quality management practices
  • Proven ability to interpret complex business and technical challenges while developing effective, data-driven solutions
  • Strategic mindset with demonstrated success implementing engineering innovation and process improvements
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently in fast-paced project environments
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Employee may be required to visit job sites, field offices, and customer locations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting EPC or design-build projects in power generation, renewable energy, substations, transmission, or industrial infrastructure
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams on large-scale infrastructure projects
  • Familiarity with utility-scale energy systems, commissioning support, and construction coordination
What You'll Get
  • Competitive Compensation
  • Weekly Pay
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Holiday Pay
