What is an engineer summer?

An Engineer Summer job is a temporary, seasonal position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in engineering fields. These roles typically involve working on real-world projects, assisting senior engineers, and developing technical skills. Summer engineers may work in industries such as aerospace, civil, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering. The job provides valuable industry exposure, networking opportunities, and practical knowledge.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as an engineer summer?

As an Engineer Summer intern, you will typically support ongoing projects by assisting with technical research, data collection, and analysis, as well as developing prototypes or updating product documentation. You may also collaborate with experienced engineers on design reviews, participate in team meetings, and present your findings or progress. Tasks are designed to match your education level while providing practical experience and insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of professional engineers. This exposure helps interns develop technical expertise, teamwork abilities, and a clearer understanding of potential career paths in engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the engineer summer position, and why are they important?

To excel as an Engineer Summer intern, you should have a foundational understanding of engineering principles, coursework in a relevant discipline, and progress toward a degree in engineering. Familiarity with common engineering software such as CAD tools, MATLAB, or project management platforms is highly valued, and some positions might prefer candidates with basic certifications in safety or specialized software. Strong communication skills, teamwork, and a willingness to learn set standout interns apart in collaborative settings. These skills and qualities are important for making meaningful contributions, adapting quickly, and gaining valuable experience in a real-world engineering environment.

Is it too late to get a summer engineering internship?

The availability of summer engineering internships depends on the company and application deadlines, which often occur several months in advance. Many programs still accept applications in early spring, but late applications may have limited options, so applying promptly increases your chances of securing an internship.

  • Work together with the engineering team to design, build, and test satellite hardware and/or software
Requirements
  • Have a four-year degree in mechanical, aerospace, or equivalent technical degree (e.g. physics or applied math)
  • A passion and enthusiasm for hardware development, including working in a fast-paced environment and hands-on design and development
  • Demonstrated ability to personally design, build, and test hardware from scratch
  • Don't meet them all? Not a problem. Please apply even if you do not meet all these criteria.
Bonus
  • Experience with CAD
  • Experience with analytical software such as stress or thermal analysis
  • Experience with electromechanical system design and specification
  • Experience with control system modeling and design
