What is an engineer helper?

Engineer Helpers assist engineers by performing tasks such as preparing materials, operating tools, and helping with the installation, maintenance, or repair of equipment. They support engineering projects by gathering data, organizing supplies, and ensuring that work areas are safe and efficient. Their role is essential for the smooth execution of engineering tasks, and they often work under the direct supervision of engineers or senior technicians.

How does an engineer helper typically collaborate with engineers and other team members on a project?

Engineer Helpers work closely with engineers by assisting with tasks such as setting up equipment, preparing materials, and performing routine maintenance or troubleshooting under supervision. They are often responsible for ensuring that workspaces are organized and that all tools are ready for use, which helps engineers focus on more complex technical aspects of a project. Collaboration also involves clear communication with both engineers and other support staff to ensure project timelines and safety protocols are followed. This hands-on teamwork provides valuable learning opportunities and insight into engineering processes, making it a great entry point for those interested in advancing within the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineer helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineer Helper, you need a basic understanding of engineering principles, strong mechanical aptitude, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, blueprint reading, and safety protocols is typically required, with OSHA certification often preferred. Strong teamwork, communication, and reliability help you stand out in assisting engineers and following instructions accurately. These skills and qualities are important to ensure safe, efficient support for engineering projects and contribute to successful project outcomes.

Job description

As a Senior Programmer Analyst, you will thrive on solving complex problems and building software that matters. This isn't about cranking out code in isolation - you'll be working as part of a Scrum team to understand user needs, design elegant solutions to real-world challenges, and mentor other developers as they tackle tough technical problems. You will own entire systems from concept to deployment, raise the technical bar across the team, and serve as a go-to resource for support staff and fellow engineers.

This position does not provide visa sponsorship now or in the future. Applicants requiring sponsorship or temporary work authorization, including OPT or CPT, are not eligible for this position

The individual in this role is expected to work at least 3 days per week in our West Des Moines office.

What you'll do:

Lead Analysis and System Design

  • Perform deep-dive needs analysis with Product Owners to truly understand the problems you're solving
  • Research, plan, design, and develop substantial components of larger, complex systems
  • Translate business requirements into technical solutions that are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with client goals

Build, Code, and Collaborate

  • Design and code new applications, reports, and software components according to department and company standards
  • Partner with AI to write clean, testable code and own the testing of everything you build or modify; treat quality as your personal responsibility, not just something you hand off
  • Conduct thorough code reviews that enforce best practices and elevate code quality across the team; provide constructive feedback that helps developers grow their skills
  • Collaborate closely with Product Owners, support staff, and end users to validate that your solutions hit the mark, communicating technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders
  • Mentor and assist other programming staff in analyzing and resolving complex technical issues
  • Identify and implement opportunities to automate repetitive processes
  • Be familiar with and apply data modeling principles to troubleshoot persistence performance issues and build out the data model for the application

Stay Ahead of the Curve

  • Keep up with industry trends and emerging technologies, including AI tools and how they can enhance developer productivity
  • Research and prototype new tools and approaches that could improve how we work, treating AI as an enabler
  • Make well-informed recommendations for technology adoption and system improvements
  • Serve as a technical resource and expert to clients and less experienced team members

Mentor and Lead

  • Participate in and lead portions of planning, research, design, and evaluation efforts for software initiatives
  • Participate in hackathons and innovation initiatives to explore creative solutions to complex problems
  • Act as a resource expert to both staff and management
  • Provide technical direction and hands-on guidance to less experienced developers
  • Help elevate the skills and standards of the entire development team
Required Skills and Experience:
  • 4-year degree in Computer Science or a related field- or equivalent training and hands-on experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in programming and/or software development- you've built real systems and solved real problems
  • Experience working directly with clients or end users in an Agile environment
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages- you're comfortable working in different tech stacks
  • Experience with Java and JavaScript - this is required for the role
  • Experience with relational database design, modeling, and administration
  • A track record of mentoring or leading junior developers
  • Ability to be in office, in our West Des Moines location, 3 days per week
