What is an endowed chair?

An Endowed Chair is a prestigious faculty position at a college or university that is funded by the revenue from an endowment, typically donated by individuals, organizations, or foundations. The endowment provides ongoing financial support for the chairholder’s salary, research, teaching, or other academic activities. Endowed Chairs often carry the donor’s name and signify a high level of respect and achievement in the academic community.

An Endowed Chair is expected to provide academic leadership by advancing research, mentoring junior faculty, and enhancing the reputation of their department or discipline. In addition to teaching and conducting high-impact research, Endowed Chairs often play a key role in securing funding, developing new programs, and fostering collaborations within and beyond the university.
