The Opportunity
The Employee Relations (ER) Specialist will be part of a team that is responsible for the execution and delivery of compliance and organizational global employee relations support. The Employee Relations Specialist role will contribute and participate in conflict resolutions and employee relations compliance, investigations and overall ER planning and communications. Contributes and coordinates guidance and policy interpretation with Human Resources Partners, leaders and professionals on a variety of employee relations-related topics that may include terminations, promotions, performance management, employee relations, and other compliance matters. Participates and collaborates on positive employee engagement initiatives and projects as needed. This role works closely with HR Partners and HR Centers of Expertise to provide cross-functional, cohesive support and solutions.
Key Responsibilities
  • Educate, train and guide managers and supervisors in practices that help ensure equitable treatment of employees and in compliance with state and federal employment laws aimed at building positive employee relations within the organization.
  • Provide support to HR Partners & Leaders and manage complex employee relations issues including performance issues, complaints and investigations to effectively resolve problems and reduce legal risk.
  • Guide and support employees and managers on a variety of employee relations matters. Prepare, track, and maintain appropriate investigation reporting and documentation.
  • Facilitate the workplace accommodations interactive process in alignment with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Ensure compliance with other related applicable laws or regulations globally. Assist with leave administration support and coordination of activities related to return-to-work.
  • Provide reporting and analysis on a variety of metrics and employee-related items. Compile employee relations case data, documentation, and tracking in case management tool.
  • Develop, recommend and implement personnel policies and processes which comply with U.S. state and federal law, meet Black & Veatch's current business needs, enhance the workplace and promote the company culture. Conduct research and provide recommendations on changes to support decision-making processes and enable appropriate policy and procedural changes within the organization.
  • Assist with required EEO/Affirmative Action and other compliance-related reporting requirements. Provide consultation to project proposal teams on EEO/AA requirements outside of existing processes.
  • Coordinate and assist with companywide Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and training. Support mental health and well-being efforts through EAP coordination and support.
  • Responsible for coordination of Anti-Harassment and other compliance-related training programs.
  • Support special projects and initiatives as assigned.
  • Ability to travel less than 10% of time. Travel may be short notice, at times.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in HR, Business Administration or related field.
  • 5+ years progressive HR experience in Employee Relations or HR with a strong background in compliance, regulatory tracking and project management skills. Experience solving employee relations issues.
  • Strong understanding of applicable laws and regulations related to employee relations and employment law. Knowledge of U.S. federal, state and local employment laws and employee relations trends Understanding of OFCCP and AAP requirements.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

  • Excellent decision-making skills and communication with capacity for listening, understanding and empathy.
  • Ability to apply consistency, fairness and inclusive thinking to problem solving and decision making.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
