ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY

SUMMARY: The Department of Apparel Merchandising and Management is currently seeking 1-2 Student Assistants to support our summer projects.

The Student Assistant will support various projects by contributing creative ideas during the design process, assist with concept development, and help refine aesthetic directions as needed.

The selected student will work under the supervision of the Administrative Service Coordinator II in the Department of Apparel Merchandising and Management.

ABOUT US: As the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the Enterprises offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Enterprises offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality 1500 management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.

The Enterprises also contributes operating support to nearly 1,100 Enterprises and scholarship programs every year, including Bronco Athletics and the Pepsi Scholarship. In addition, the Enterprises administers grants and contracts, contributes to campus security, and supports several university publications. The Enterprises contributes over $1 million annually to Cal Poly Pomona.

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):

The position will assist with one or more of the following activities:

  • Contribute creative ideas and support product and concept development.
  • Draft, edit, and prepare patterns using CAD software.
  • Plot patterns and manage digital file setup for printing and production.
  • Cut and sew samples or small-batch products for departmental projects.
  • Participate in fittings and assist with applying pattern corrections.
  • Work on garment and merchandise projects involving printing, heat pressing, and embroidery.
  • Complete garment finishing tasks, including printing, pressing, hemming, closures, and quality checks.
  • Support training, workflow development, and process management in the Apparel Micro Factory, including use of equipment such as the sublimation printer, direct-to-garment printer, rotary heat press, laser cutter, and sewing machines.
  • Assist with managing inventory of supplies, materials, and finished products.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Basic proficiency in patternmaking and garment construction

Familiarity with CAD patternmaking software (e.g., Gerber, TUKA, Browzwear, CLO 3D)

Ability to sew using industrial and domestic machines

Strong understanding of garment terminology, seam types, and construction methods

Ability to use garment printing and embroidery equipment.

Ability to follow instructions, meet deadlines, and work independently

Reliable attendance and strong time-management skills

Professional, respectful communication and conduct in the studio

Attention to detail in pattern accuracy, sewing quality, and file organization

Willingness to learn new techniques and receive constructive feedback
