Embedded Software Engineer Relocation information

What are Embedded Software Engineers and what does relocation mean in this context?

Embedded Software Engineers design, develop, and optimize software that runs on specialized hardware or embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or IoT devices. In the context of relocation, this job may require moving to a particular city or country where the employer's development center or project site is located. Companies often support relocation by assisting with moving expenses, visa processing, and settling-in services. Relocating can offer exposure to new technologies, cultures, and professional growth opportunities. It's important to inquire about the specific relocation package and support provided by the employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in C/C++, real-time operating systems, microcontroller architecture, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools such as debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems (like Git), and often certifications in embedded systems or IoT are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across hardware and software teams. These skills ensure robust, efficient, and reliable product development in complex embedded environments.

What is the difference between Embedded Software Engineer Relocation vs Embedded Software Developer?

AspectEmbedded Software Engineer RelocationEmbedded Software Developer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; certifications like C, C++, or RTOS are commonSame as Embedded Software Engineer Relocation
Work EnvironmentTypically in manufacturing, automotive, or consumer electronics companies; involves relocation to different sites or regionsSimilar environments; focus on developing and testing embedded systems
Industry UsageUsed across automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, and industrial automationCommonly used in the same industries for software development roles

Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, with the main difference being that Embedded Software Engineer Relocation emphasizes geographic mobility, often involving relocation to different company sites or regions. The core responsibilities and industry applications are largely overlapping, making them closely related roles in embedded systems development.

What are the common challenges faced by Embedded Software Engineers when relocating for a new position?

Relocating as an Embedded Software Engineer often involves adapting to new company processes, development tools, and hardware platforms, which can vary significantly between organizations. Additionally, engineers may need to quickly build relationships with cross-functional teams, such as hardware engineers and quality assurance specialists, to ensure seamless product development. Familiarizing oneself with local industry standards or regulatory requirements is also crucial, especially if relocating internationally. Proactively seeking mentorship and participating in team meetings can help smooth the transition and accelerate integration into the new work environment.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will be a crucial member of our Core Avionics organization and will directly contribute to the successful development of avionics components for our Lunar Vehicles. Our avionics components make up integrated products such as Command & Data Handling (C&DH), Electrical Power Systems (EPS), Cameras, Lidars, Radars, Radios, Network Switches, and similar. Built with modern Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), microcontrollers, and advanced System-on-Chip (SoC) devices, our integrated avionics products host embedded software that configures, controls, performs preprocessing, and enhances the operation of our hardware components.

We are looking for an experienced embedded software engineer that will be responsible for designing, implementing and verifying embedded software for mission-critical spaceflight systems working directly with avionics hardware engineers. This is a software role that is hardware heavy, and the candidate that we are looking for should be comfortable reading hardware datasheets, understanding registers maps, have a keen sense of performance tradeoffs, and must have hands-on lab debugging skills. You will collaborate with cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams and often work on multiple embedded software efforts simultaneously.

Special Mentions:

  • Relocation provided

  • Blue Origin has multiple locations. Depending on the location chosen for this opportunity, you may be expected to travel up to 20% to support hardware deliveries, meetings, and reviews

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing Board Support Package (BSP) software for new hardware, including driver development

  • Bare-metal or OS-level programming for hardware initialization, control, embedded data processing, and networking/communication

  • Hands-on work with avionics spaceflight hardware, including debugging with logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG debuggers

  • Participating in design concepts and reviews, with special attention to partitioning between HW and SW implementation

  • Performing benchmark analysis and deploying benchmarking code to characterize hardware performance

  • Bring up and utilization of HW-accelerators in modern SoC devices (e.g. encoders, decoders, encryption engines, image signal processing cores, etc.)

  • Scripting, Linux development, and hands-on work with development kits and sensor modules

  • Defining and implementing embedded SW for interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, TCP/IP, UDP, GMSL, SpaceWire, CameraLink, Aurora, AXI, AMBA, etc.

  • Developing boot and SW-based fault-tolerance strategies

  • Publishing internal documents and memos, participating in design reviews, reviewing and generating requirements

  • Willingness to learn new skills, languages, debug/development tools

  • We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related technical field

  • 6+ years of experience in the field(s) above
