The Role
The Electromechanical Engineer will research, design, and develop mechanical and electromechanical systems for U.S. Navy submarines and carriers in support of design and construction. This role combines technical engineering with hands-on field support, requiring collaboration with shipyard trades and engineering teams to ensure all systems meet safety, quality, cost, and schedule requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
• Support the design and development of electrical and combat systems.
• Establish system and subsystem design requirements from top-level specifications.
• Manage system interfaces and ensure integrated functionality.
• Develop and execute verification and validation procedures.
• Lead or contribute to the creation of technical deliverables and reports.
• Coordinate with design, test, and construction teams.
• Support power generation and distribution system design and integration efforts.
Skills & Experience:
• The preferred candidate would be one that is interested in both mechanical and electrical aspects of controls systems.
• Experience or coursework in one or more of the following
o Sonar Systems
o Computer/Data System Integration
o Radio System Integration
o Cabling
o Requirement Management and System Engineering Approach
o Power Distribution or Power Generation
o Control Systems
o Ability to read and understand system schematics and drawings
• Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink or similar modeling tools.
• Understanding of control systems and PID control loops.
• Experience or familiarity with submarine or carrier electrical systems and propulsion plants.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven technical writing ability.
• Experience working in multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
• Experience with submarine or carrier programs (Virginia Class, CVN Class).
• SAP, TeamCenter, NGP, or NX software experience.
• Hands-on experience with acoustic analysis, US Navy mechanical or fluid ship systems, rotating equipment, generators, or motor controls.
• Systems Engineering or Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience using Cameo or MATLAB Systems Composer.
• Experience with acoustic transfer functions, making acoustic predictions, performing acoustic or vibration testing, ship or systems engineering, and performing digital signal processing
• Understanding of integrated electric systems, microgrids, and renewable energy integration.
• Understanding of proportional, integral, derivative (PID) control systems and logic diagrams
• Prior leadership, testing, or shipyard integration experience.
• Familiarity with Navy power distribution systems and related components
• DOD Security Clearance is preferred, but not required to start.
