What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Educational Testing, and why are they important?

To thrive in Educational Testing, you need a strong background in educational measurement, psychometrics, and data analysis, typically supported by a relevant degree in education, psychology, or statistics. Familiarity with testing platforms, statistical analysis software (such as SPSS or R), and knowledge of assessment standards and certifications (like NCME or AERA) are important. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and strong communication skills help professionals design valid assessments and interpret results clearly. These skills ensure tests are reliable, fair, and provide meaningful data to inform educational decisions.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in educational testing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in educational testing often encounter challenges such as ensuring test validity and reliability, managing tight deadlines during peak assessment periods, and maintaining fairness and accessibility for diverse groups of students. Addressing these issues typically involves close collaboration with educators, psychometricians, and IT specialists to design rigorous assessment tools and implement quality assurance checks. Adopting clear communication practices and ongoing professional development can also help teams stay updated on best practices and emerging technologies, ultimately leading to more effective and equitable testing solutions.

What is the difference between Educational Testing vs Educational Assessment?

AspectEducational TestingEducational Assessment
CredentialsTypically requires testing certifications or related credentialsOften involves broader evaluation certifications or educational qualifications
Work EnvironmentTesting centers, schools, or online platformsClassroom settings, schools, or educational institutions
Usage in IndustryUsed for standardized testing, entrance exams, and certification assessmentsUsed for student evaluations, progress reports, and curriculum effectiveness

Educational Testing and Educational Assessment are related but distinct roles. Educational Testing focuses on administering standardized tests and exams, often in testing centers or online. Educational Assessment involves evaluating student learning and educational programs, typically within schools or classrooms. Both require similar credentials but serve different purposes in the education sector.

What is educational testing?

Educational testing refers to the process of using assessments, exams, or standardized tests to measure students' knowledge, skills, abilities, or academic progress. These tests can be used for a variety of purposes, such as evaluating student learning, informing instruction, determining placement, or assessing school performance. Educational testing is conducted at all levels of education and can include classroom quizzes, state-mandated assessments, college entrance exams, and other standardized tests. The results of these tests help educators, students, and policymakers make informed decisions about education.

Join us in our journey of measuring progress to power human progress worldwide.

The Senior Director of the Center for Responsible AI in Learning and Assessment serves as the intellectual and administrative leader for ETS’s applied research and innovation agenda in artificial intelligence. This position leads the development, prioritization, and execution of a multi-year research portfolio focused on AI-enabled assessment, learning technologies, AI literacy, personalization, responsible AI, and large-scale model evaluation. This role provides strategic direction, scientific leadership, and people leadership across an integrated program of research and consulting.

This position is designed for a distinguished AI researcher who can shape the future of assessment by advancing and applying state-of-the-art approaches in artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, and/or generative AI to high-stakes educational and workforce measurement. The Senior Research Director will lead research agendas that improve validity, fairness, reliability, security, interpretability, and impact of AI-enabled assessments—at scale.

The incumbent directs and administers fiscal, operational, personnel, and policy implementation activities for the research center while conducting an independent program of high-impact research and scholarly dissemination.

Primary Responsibilities

1) Strategic Scientific Leadership and vision for AI

  • Define and lead a multi-year research agenda at the intersection of AI and measurement, including:

  • automated scoring and evaluation (writing, speaking, constructed response, performance tasks)

  • LLM-enabled assessment design and delivery (e.g., generative task creation, adaptive interactions)

  • NLP and multimodal modeling for language and skills measurement

  • psychometric modeling integrated with ML (hybrid models, fairness-aware measurement, Bayesian/IRT + deep learning)

  • model evaluation frameworks aligned to validity arguments and operational constraints

  • responsible AI for high-stakes testing (bias, transparency, privacy, security, governance)

  • Identify emerging opportunities in AI

  • Serve as a scientific thought leader for ETS on AI-enabled assessment innovation, identifying emerging techniques, risks, and opportunities.

2) Research & Innovation Management
  • Lead the design and implementation of complex AI focused research programs requiring coordination of tasks, timelines, data resources, and staff across multiple projects.

  • Provide hands-on scientific direction and consultation on research protypes, models and analytic tools, methodology, and evaluation strategies.

  • Monitor research progress, ensure methodological rigor, and guide teams to high-quality deliverables that meet rigorous standards for fairness, reliability, and transparency.

3) External Funding, Proposals, and Partnerships
  • Consult on proposal development, identify potential funding agencies, and coordinate responses to RFPs.

  • Develop strong partnerships with universities, research labs, policy bodies, foundations, and other funding organizations.

  • Serve as liaison between ETS Research Institute and key client groups, including policy/advisory boards and government agencies.

  • Represent ETS at conferences and advisory groups
